Chapter 1 - The Man in the Shadows

The marble corridor of the Vance Estate felt colder than an operating theater. The chandelier overhead cast sharp, glittering fractures across the polished white floor, where Victoria Sterling’s black leather riding crop lay abandoned like a venomous snake. Alexander Vance stood motionless, his broad silhouette towering between his hysterical fiancée and the trembling young woman seated on the mahogany bench. His charcoal suit jacket hung heavy over the maid’s slender shoulders, the silk lining carrying his signature scent of cedarwood and crisp autumn rain.

Alexander’s gaze remained locked on the woman who had registered on his payroll as "Elena Vance"—a quiet, unassuming girl with no traceable history, whose only defining trait for the past four months had been her silence. But her silence was bleeding away, replaced by something calculated, razor-sharp, and terrifyingly familiar.

"Look at me," Alexander commanded softly, his deep baritone cutting through the breathless quiet of the watching aristocrats.

Elena didn't look at him. Her eyes were fixed on the far archway leading into the Grand Ballroom. Standing beneath the gilded floral arch was a tall, silver-haired man in a bespoke navy tuxedo. He held a glass of untouched Dom Pérignon, his fingers steady, but his pale eyes were narrowed like a hawk that had just spotted prey long thought dead.

Marcus Blackwell.

Elena’s pulse thundered in her ears, vibrating against her temples with the force of a war drum. Her breathing, which she had carefully controlled while bandaging her whipped forearm, hitched in her throat. Her fingernails bit into the plush fabric of Alexander's jacket. Marcus was the CEO of Blackwell Neuro-Genetics—the man responsible for the clinical catastrophe that had destroyed her family, stripped her of her medical license, and sent her into hiding under a dead woman’s name.

"Elena," Alexander repeated, leaning closer, his keen grey eyes catching the micro-expressions of raw panic tightening her jawline. "Who is that man to you?"

"Alexander, stop this madness!" Victoria’s screech shattered the tension. She stepped forward, her diamond bracelets clattering violently as she pointed a manicured finger at Elena. "She is a nobody! A kitchen rat who dropped my champagne flutes and sneered at me! You are embarrassing me in front of the governor, the board members, and my father! Call security and have this tramp thrown into the gutter!"

Alexander turned his head slowly. The look he gave Victoria would have chilled magma. "You struck an unarmed woman with a whip under my roof, Victoria. In front of three dozen of my business partners. The only person making a spectacle of themselves is you."

"She provoked me!" Victoria protested, her cheeks flushed with a mixture of humiliation and narcissistic rage. "She looked at me like I was dirt! She’s been watching you for weeks, Alexander. Don't you see what she's doing? She’s an opportunist trying to worm her way into your bed!"

"Leave," Alexander said. The word was dropped like a guillotine blade.

Victoria gasped, taking a step back, her chest heaving. "What did you say?"

"Go to the guest wing. Clean your mascara. And do not speak another word until this gala concludes, or I will have my security escort you off the premises in handcuffs for assault." Alexander didn't blink. He meant every syllable.

A chorus of hushed murmurs rippled through the gathered elite. Victoria Sterling, the crown jewel of New York society, had just been dismissed like a misbehaving child. Tears of pure venom welled in Victoria's eyes. She glared at Elena with murderous intent before spinning on her red Christian Louboutin heels and storming down the hall, her silk gown hissing against the marble.

Alexander turned back to Elena. He offered his large, calloused hand. "Can you stand now?"

Elena took a breath, forcibly locking her terror behind the impenetrable wall of her training. "Yes, Mr. Vance."

When she placed her small hand into his, Alexander felt the distinct calluses along the inside of her index finger and thumb—the unmistakable marks left by surgical instruments, not dusters or mops. He didn't let go. Instead, his grip tightened slightly, anchoring her.

"Up," he said gently, pulling her to her feet. "You and I are going to my private study. And you are going to tell me why a woman with the hands of a trauma surgeon is serving canapés in my house."

May you like

Behind them, through the gilded archway, Marcus Blackwell set down his champagne glass and pulled a phone from his breast pocket, his eyes never leaving Elena's retreating back.
