Chapter 28 - The Fog Over Chesapeake

The waters of the lower Chesapeake Bay churned black and violent beneath the belly of the MH-60M Black Hawk helicopter. Dense, freezing fog rolled across the surface, cutting visibility to less than fifty yards.

Evelyn sat on the edge of the troop compartment, her boots resting on the exterior step, secured only by a safety tether. The icy salt spray stung her face, but she felt completely numb. She was wearing full night-vision optics, an integrated ballistic plate carrier, and carried her father’s Colt alongside a suppressed HK416 carbine.

Beside her were six men—former members of her elite special operations detachment who had answered Holloway’s emergency recall without asking a single question.

"Target in sight, three hundred meters out," the pilot’s voice crackled through the bone-conduction headsets. "Old decommissioned oil drilling platform, re-registered to Meridian Maritime Logistics. Thermal imaging shows at least twenty armed hostiles on the upper deck. Comms are blazing with satellite uplinks. Something big is uploading."

"Fast-rope insertion," Evelyn commanded, racking the bolt of her rifle. "No warning shots. Shoot to eliminate."

"Green light in five... four... three..."

The helicopter flared violently against the sea wind, hovering thirty feet above the rusted metal helipad of the platform. Thick braided ropes dropped into the mist.

Evelyn went down first. Her boots hit the grated steel deck with a sharp metallic clatter, and she rolled immediately into a combat crouch, sweeping the landing zone. Two Meridian sentries in heavy Gore-Tex combat gear emerged from behind a pressurized storage tank, their weapons raising.

Evelyn fired three rounds through the lead guard’s chest before he could yell, then dropped the second with a precise shot through his ocular cavity.

Behind her, her operators poured down the ropes like specters, fanning out in a lethal perimeter formation. Suppressed gunfire clicked rhythmically against the howling wind as they cleared the exterior catwalks, methodically wiping out the platform’s perimeter security within forty-five seconds.

"Deck clear!" her master sergeant called out.

"Breaching the server room," Evelyn replied, leading the stack down a narrow, damp steel staircase toward the central operations core.

The interior of the rig had been completely gutted. Instead of industrial drilling machinery, the cavernous chamber was filled with humming rows of liquid-cooled server racks bathed in sterile, icy-blue LED lighting. Cables thick as human arms snaked across the floor, leading toward a raised glass-walled command station at the far end of the room.

And inside that glass office stood an elderly man in a bespoke tailored suit, calmly sipping scotch while a massive progress bar crawled across three wall-mounted monitors:

`ARCHANGEL SATELLITE SYSTEM: TOTAL REPROGRAMMING - 87% COMPLETE.`

Standing behind him was Senator Harrison Vance.
