Chapter 24 - The Biometric Key

"Try taking it," Evelyn whispered, not budging an inch.

Holloway raised his weapon toward Vance. "You're outnumbered, Donald. My Rangers hold the perimeter of this cemetery."

Vance chuckled, a dry, clicking sound in the confined space. "Check your comms, Bradley. Your Rangers were relieved of duty five minutes ago by a direct executive task force order signed by the Deputy Secretary of Defense. The only people standing between me and that vault are you and a disgraced female captain who couldn't even save her brother from a prison shiv."

A heavy silence descended over the grave, punctuated only by the distant rumbles of thunder.

"Richard didn't steal that coordinate from your men, Vance," Evelyn said suddenly, her eyes narrowing as she pieced the puzzle together. "You gave it to him. You let him escape. You stabbed him just enough to make it look like a rogue hit, knowing he would drag himself to me."

"He was always weak," Vance said, his face hardening. "Richard spent twenty years pretending to be an alpha predator in boardrooms, but he broke the moment the walls closed in. He knew Samuel buried the terminal here. But Richard's DNA couldn't open it. Samuel never trusted him."

Vance stepped to the edge of the trench, aiming his weapon directly at Evelyn's forehead. "Samuel coded the biometric lock to you, Captain Hayes. His favorite soldier. The one who earned her brass in the dirt, not in a penthouse. Put your hand on the glass, Evelyn. Or I put a round through General Holloway’s skull, and then I drag your dead hand across the sensor anyway."

Evelyn looked at Holloway. The old General gave a slow, imperceptible nod. He wasn't telling her to surrender; he was telling her to activate the system.

Evelyn slowly lowered her rifle into the mud. She turned toward the terminal nestled inside the lead-lined casket. The glass scanner pulsed with a faint green light.

She placed her right palm flat against the cold surface.

A crimson beam traced the ridges of her skin. A sharp prick stung her index finger—a rapid micro-needle blood draw for DNA sequencing.

`GENETIC MATCH CONFIRMED: HAYES, EVELYN M.`

`CLEARANCE: OMEGA-ONE.`

`OVERRIDE PROTOCOL INITIATED. RELEASING THE ARCHANGEL VAULT.`

A mechanical thud reverberated through the earth beneath their feet. The tungsten slab slid back with the screech of hydraulic servos, revealing not a stack of cash or computer hard drives, but a vintage reel-to-reel tape recorder, an encrypted satellite phone, and an old service Colt 1911 with seven rounds loaded in the magazine.

And then, through the hidden speakers wired into the concrete bunker walls, a voice spoke from forty years in the past.
