Chapter 19 - The Trap Springs

Evelyn stood in the crosshairs of the man she had revered her entire life. Her heart pounded, but her mind—sharpened by trauma, combat, and loss—cleared into diamond-hard focus.

She remembered her father’s words, written in the margins of his private notebook: *When the wolves wear stars on their shoulders, trust only the code.*

"The transponder key isn't in my pocket, General," Evelyn said slowly, raising her hands to shoulder height.

Vance’s eyes narrowed dangerously. "Don't lie to me, girl. You had it on my kitchen table."

"I had the replica," she replied, a faint, dangerous smile touching the corners of her lips. "Did you really think I didn't notice the encrypted relay node hidden in your safehouse chimney? Did you think I didn't see the tailing unit that followed me from the cemetery three weeks ago? My father didn't hide the protocol on that chip, General. The chip was an automated beacon."

Suddenly, high above the low-hanging mountain storm clouds, the deafening, earth-shaking roar of twin supersonic jet engines ripped through the valley.

Two F-22 Raptors broke through the cloud cover at five hundred feet, their afterburners lighting the gray sky in brilliant streaks of orange flame. Before anyone on the runway could react, four black unmarked combat helicopters—MH-60 Little Birds carrying operators from the United States Army Intelligence and Security Command—descended from the tree line like predatory hawks.

Sirens echoed across the valley. A voice boomed through external loudhailers from the skies:

*"General Marcus Vance, by order of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Director of the FBI, you are relieved of command! Drop your weapon and step away from Captain Hayes! You are surrounded by federal forces!"*

Sterling’s face went white. "You set us up!" he screamed, raising his gun to shoot Evelyn.

Sully didn't give him the chance. A single .308 round fired from Sully’s sniper rifle cracked through the storm, shattering the helicopter window and striking Sterling squarely in the chest. He collapsed backward into the fuselage, dead before he touched the deck.

Vance spun, his pistol snapping toward Evelyn’s chest in blind desperation.

Evelyn didn't hesitate. She grabbed his wrist, twisting it violently outward while driving her knee into his liver. The General stumbled, his weapon firing harmlessly into the asphalt. Evelyn swept his legs out from under him, slamming the four-star general hard onto his back, pinning his neck beneath her combat boot with the cold steel of her Sig Sauer pressed directly between his eyes.

"Don't move, traitor," Evelyn snarled, rain washing the dirt from her face.
