Chapter 20 - The Unopened Vault

Federal agents and military police swarmed the tarmac, securing Vance, disarming the surviving contractors, and rushing tactical paramedics to the Black Hawk to stabilize Richard.

As the medics cut away Richard's bloody shirt, applying pressure dressings to his abdomen, he reached out, his trembling, blood-soaked fingers catching Evelyn’s sleeve.

"Evie..." he whispered, his eyes wide with a terror that went beyond the pain of his physical wounds.

"Save your breath, Richard," Evelyn said, kneeling beside him as the helicopter rotors finally spun down into silence. "It's over. Vance is in cuffs. The military intelligence team tracked the entire syndicate. You're going to a federal hospital under top-tier military protection."

"No... Evie, you don't understand," Richard gasped, coughing violently, his grip tightening with frantic strength. "Vance wasn't the head of Meridian. He was only... the uniform they used to hide behind."

Evelyn froze. "What are you talking about?"

Richard reached into the inner lining of his prison jumpsuit, pulling out a crumpled, blood-stained slip of parchment that he had kept hidden inside the sole of his shoe—a document he had stolen from the prison transfer team before they stabbed him.

"The bunker... Site-9... it wasn't built for Meridian," Richard whispered, his voice fading rapidly into a shallow rattle. "It was built by Dad. Forty years ago. The transponder... it doesn't open a bank account... it opens the biometric vault beneath Arlington National Cemetery."

"Arlington?" Evelyn’s breath stalled in her lungs. "Dad's grave?"

"He didn't bury his secrets in a safe, Evie," Richard sobbed, his eyes rolling back as the paramedics pushed an oxygen mask over his mouth. "He buried them... with the coffin. But the coffin... Evie... the coffin was never empty..."

The monitor beside Richard screamed a flatline tone. The paramedics shoved Evelyn back, shouting orders, frantically charging defibrillator pads as they worked to restart his heart.

Standing alone in the pouring rain, Evelyn looked down at the blood-stained parchment in her hand. On it was a satellite coordinate directly beneath Section 60 of Arlington National Cemetery—where Samuel Hayes was laid to rest with full military honors.

And below the coordinate was a single typed sentence that shattered everything she believed she had just saved:

*“If you are reading this, Evelyn, the man you buried was not your father. And the war has only just begun.”*
