Chapter 12 - The Shadows on the Driveway

Evelyn didn't waste a heartbeat on fear. Fear was an indulgence for people who didn't understand terminal velocity.

Dropping the phone, she darted to the master closet. She bypassed the civilian dresses and casual jackets, reaching into the hidden false back where her biometric safe clicked open with a quiet thumbprint scan. Inside rested her customized Sig Sauer P320, three loaded magazines of 9mm hollow points, and her combat tactical knife. She racked the slide with a clean, metallic *clack*, chambering a round before pressing the weapon against her leg.

Moving through the dark hallway without turning on a single light, she stepped onto the landing. She knew every creak of the floorboards, every angle of shadow.

Through the high arched window of her living room, two sweeping beams of halogen light cut across the rain-drenched grass outside. An unmarked, matte-black Suburban had breached the automated security gate, its heavy tires chewing through gravel without a sound. Behind it, a second vehicle idled, blocking the narrow lane that led back to the county highway.

These weren't common street criminals or media scavengers looking for another headline about the disgraced Hayes dynasty. They moved in precise, bounding overwatch formations—two men advancing along the perimeter while two held rifles at the low ready near the engine block. Professional tier-one contractors. Black ops cleanup.

Evelyn slipped down the staircase, her breath slow and controlled. She remembered her father’s office in the study—a room she had kept meticulously preserved since his passing. Above the fireplace hung Samuel Hayes’s shadow box, displaying his Silver Star, his Legion of Merit, and his officer's dress dagger, gifted to him by his West Point classmates in 1978.

*The hilt,* Richard had screamed. *The serial number.*

She entered the study silently, the ambient glow of the storm illuminating the room in brief, violent flashes of lightning. She reached for the glass display case, using the butt of her pistol to shatter the lock without shattering the frame. Her fingers closed around the cold, brass-wire-wrapped handle of Samuel’s dagger.

A heavy *thud* echoed from the back patio door. The unmistakable sound of a hydraulic glass-cutter, followed by the soft pop of an electronic lock being bypassed.

They were inside.

Evelyn inspected the pommel of the dagger. Underneath the crest of the eagle, there wasn't a standard screw. It was a custom micro-machined threaded cap. Twisting it with all the leverage her thumb could muster, the seal broke with a faint hiss of pressurized air. Inside the hollow handle slid a sliver of platinum—a micro-drive military transponder key, etched with the classification seal of the Joint Special Operations Command.

Suddenly, a red laser diode slashed through the study door, painting the wall directly behind her ear.
