Chapter 25 - The Voice from the Crypt

The voice was unmistakably Samuel Hayes. Deep, gravelly, carrying the distinct cadence of a combat commander who had buried too many men under foreign flags.

*"Evelyn. If this tape is turning, it means Vance has backed you into a corner, and Bradley Holloway is either standing beside you or already dead."*

Colonel Vance froze, his finger slackening on the trigger as the dead man’s voice echoed through the subterranean tomb.

*"Listen to me carefully, sweetheart,"* Samuel’s recorded voice continued, devoid of sentimentality, cold with operational precision. *"Meridian is not a company. It is an algorithmic parasite. In 1991, we developed an automated financial system designed to bankrupt hostile nations by shorting their defense infrastructure before covert strikes. But the men running the program turned it inward. They began shorting American contracts, orchestrating base closures, and manufacturing troop casualties to spike private logistics shares."*

Evelyn felt a wave of icy fury surge through her veins. Her entire life—her father’s distance, Richard’s ruthless corporate greed, her own deployments into desert hellholes—had been engineered for profit by the men standing above her.

*"Colonel Donald Vance is not the mastermind,"* the tape hissed, tape hiss crackling like dry brush. *"He is an errand boy for the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee. And Vance's real objective tonight isn't to take the Archangel keys. It's to trigger the failsafe."*

"Shut it off!" Vance roared, lunging forward with his carbine raised.

"Move and you die!" Holloway shouted, firing his sidearm.

The crack of the gunshot was deafening inside the canvas tent. The bullet caught Vance’s lead contractor in the shoulder, spinning him into the mud. Evelyn didn't hesitate. Dropping low into the pit, she grabbed the vintage Colt 1911 from the vault, racked the slide with one fluid, practiced motion, and fired twice through the floorboards of the trench.

The first heavy .45-caliber slug tore through the second contractor’s knee; the second shattered Vance’s weapon, ripping the carbine from his hands in a shower of splintered polymer and metal.

"Evie, get out of the pit!" Holloway screamed as Vance pulled a secondary sidearm from his chest rig.

Evelyn vaulted from the mud like an apex predator, her combat boot striking Vance square in the chest, sending the seasoned operative crashing back against the marble face of an adjacent headstone. Before he could recover, Evelyn’s knee was pinned against his throat, the barrel of her father’s .45 pressed firmly between his eyes.

"Who owns the network, Vance?" Evelyn snarled, her knuckles whitening. "Who gave the order to assassinate my brother?"

Vance spat blood onto the wet grass, coughing violently, but a twisted grin spread across his face.

"You're too late, Captain," Vance choked out. "The moment your DNA unlocked that vault... a broadcast signal routed directly to Walter Reed Medical Center. Richard's life support isn't hooked to the hospital grid. It’s hooked to our kill-switch. In ten minutes... your brother’s brain will be liquefied by a focused microwave neuro-toxin feed."
