Heavy footsteps echoed up the sweeping staircase as two men in dark tailored suits flashed federal identification badges.
“Mr. Ethan Hawthorne? We are agents with the federal financial crimes and domestic welfare division,” the lead investigator announced.
“Right on time, Agent Carter; my wife’s illegal corporate maneuvers and child endangerment warrants are ready for execution,” Ethan replied.
Victoria stopped struggling against the security guard, her eyes widening as she stared at the federal badges.
“Federal crimes? What are you talking about? I haven't committed any federal offenses!” Victoria denied frantically.
Agent Carter pulled a thick manila folder from his briefcase, flipping open the legally binding documents under the wall light.
“You have been indicted for wire fraud, embezzlement from the family trust, and conspiracy against a minor,” Carter stated flatly.
Victoria’s knees buckled beneath her, forcing Officer Vance to support her weight so she wouldn't collapse onto the nursery rug.
“This is a nightmare... a terrible nightmare,” Victoria whispered, her voice cracking with sudden despair.
