Chapter 18 - The Subterranean Nursery

The bunker was a subterranean labyrinth of reinforced steel and buzzing fluorescent tubes. The deeper Nathan and Kane ventured, the more the air felt heavy, saturated with humidity and that suffocating floral stench.
The walls were no longer bare concrete. They were lined with climate-controlled vivariums. Inside each glass enclosure grew grotesque, synthetic biomatter—translucent artificial wombs connected by thick networks of blue fluid, pulsating in unison like a collective, mechanical heart.
"What is this madness?" Kane whispered, his weapon sweeping across the horrific nursery.
"It’s Julian’s dream corrupted into a nightmare," Nathan answered, stepping over bundles of fiber-optic cables. "Julian was obsessed with conquering genetic diseases before birth. He wanted to engineer an artificial amniotic environment that could repair cellular degradation. Vanessa weaponized it. She realized she could use the same process to rewrite adult human DNA—to create total physiological compliance."
Suddenly, the lights throughout the vast chamber flickered and died.
A high-pitched klaxon began to wail, echoing off the damp rock walls. In the darkness, emergency spotlights flared up one by one, illuminating an elevated surgical gallery at the far end of the cavern.
There, strapped to an angled operating table beneath blinding surgical lamps, was Leo.
The boy was conscious, his chest heaving with silent sobs, his eyes locked onto Nathan. Surrounding the table were three surgeons in full biohazard suits, their instruments gleaming under the cold lights.
And standing beside the table, dressed in a crimson evening gown beneath a pristine white lab coat, her lips painted blood-red and her blonde hair pinned in an immaculate chignon, was Vanessa.
She looked entirely unblemished, not a trace of imprisonment or panic on her sculpted face. In her right hand, she held a massive, modified mechanical injector—a pneumatic rifle fitted with a glass chamber containing pure, glowing blue liquid.

"Welcome to the christening, Nathan," her voice echoed through the facility’s public address speakers, smooth, mocking, and dripping with venom. "You arrived just in time to give your brother’s son away."
