Chapter 14 - The Ghosts of Harbor Cove

Leaving Leo under the heavy protection of Kane’s most trusted off-the-grid tactical unit at a safehouse in Cheyenne, Nathan and Agent Kane boarded an unmarked private jet bound for the desolate coast of Massachusetts. The rain over Harbor Cove was relentless, battering the salt-crusted rocks of the abandoned peninsula.
Through the mist emerged the skeletal concrete remains of the St. Jude Biometric Repository. On paper, it was a condemned ruin surrounded by biohazard warning signs and rusted chain-link fences. But as Nathan approached the perimeter with night-vision optics, the signs of active occupation were unmistakable: state-of-the-art infrared cameras hidden within rotting birdhouses, and fresh tire tracks carved deep into the mud leading directly into an underground loading dock.
"Thermal scans show minimal life signatures above ground," Kane whispered, adjusting his suppressed carbine. "Sub-surface is heavily shielded with lead plating. Our comms are going to get cut the second we drop down that elevator shaft."
"Good," Nathan cocked his weapon, his expression carved of stone. "She won't hear me coming."
They bypassed the electronic keypad with Kane’s military-grade decryptor. The heavy blast doors hissed open with a hydraulic groan that had been well-lubricated. As they stepped into the descending corridor, the smell of salt and rot vanished, instantly replaced by the pristine, chilling scent of clinical sterility—bleach, ozone, and that unmistakable, nauseating tuberose perfume.
The hallways were lit by low-voltage emergency lights, casting long, predatory shadows against walls lined with glass-encased incubation chambers.
Nathan stopped dead in his tracks.
Inside the chambers weren't synthetic models or scientific equipment. Lined up along the corridor were dozens of silicone-encased prosthetic suits, identical to the one Vanessa had worn, each fitted with synthetic vascular tubes and pumping mechanisms filled with bubbling, iridescent blue liquid.
"My God," Kane breathed, raising his weapon with trembling hands. "She wasn't manufacturing one cure or one weapon. She was running an assembly line."
At the end of the corridor, an automated terminal pinged to life. A single video file began to play on loop. Nathan stepped closer to the screen.
The video showed a younger Vanessa, clad in a lab coat, standing next to a man whose face was bathed in surgical light. Nathan gasped. The man strapped to the gurney wasn't a stranger. It was his older brother, Julian Vance, recorded mere days before his supposed death. Julian was conscious, his eyes wide with horror as Vanessa held a long stainless-steel aspiration needle—the identical twin to the one Leo had used—filled with that electric blue fluid.

*"Don't fight it, Julian,"* Vanessa’s recorded voice purred through the monitors. *"Your wealth builds the temple. Your genetics feed the prototype. And when Nathan takes your place, he will be the father of the new world."*
