Chapter 12 - The Decoy in Cell 402

By dawn, the mountain estate was swarming with unmarked black SUVs. Special Agent Marcus Kane, the hardened Department of Justice investigator who had spearheaded the indictment of Vance Enterprises’ corrupted board, walked into Nathan’s kitchen, carrying a manila dossier stamped with red classification seals.
"It’s impossible, Nathan," Kane said bluntly, pouring himself a mug of black coffee without asking. "Vanessa Vance is locked in the psychiatric sub-level of the ADX Florence supermax facility. She is under twenty-four-hour biometric surveillance, strapped to a reinforced medical gurney. A fly couldn’t get into her cell, let alone let her out to play boogeyman in Montana."
"Then explain the photograph!" Nathan slammed his fist onto the island counter, his knuckles white. "Explain the scent! Explain how someone stood over me while I slept, walked into Leo's room, and left an umbilical clamp dripping with the exact proprietary compound she engineered!"
Leo sat at the breakfast nook wrapped in a fleece blanket, staring silently into his untouched oatmeal. The boy hadn't spoken since the monitor whispered that lullaby. His young eyes carried an exhaustion no child should ever endure.
"We checked the compound from the clamp," Kane murmured, lowering his voice, his eyes drifting nervously toward Leo. "It’s not just the industrial solvent we found in her prosthetic belly during the raid. The lab ran a spectral analysis three hours ago. Nathan... it contains human embryonic DNA. But the chromosomal sequence is shattered. It’s an engineered pathogen."
Nathan felt the room spin. "What are you talking about?"
"Vanessa wasn’t just staging a fake pregnancy to seize your family’s trust fund," Kane revealed, opening the folder to reveal high-resolution lab slides showing microscopic cellular structures glowing with bioluminescence. "She was incubating a biological delivery system. The fake belly wasn't just a prop; it was a mobile bioreactor. And the needle Leo drove into her abdomen didn't just expose her lie—it ruptured the incubation cycle before it was ready."
Before Nathan could process the horror, Kane’s encrypted satellite phone buzzed against the marble table. Kane clicked it on speaker.
"Agent Kane," a frantic voice crackled through static from the supermax facility in Colorado. "We have a Code Zero in Psychiatric Sub-Level Four."
Kane straightened up, his face hardening. "Report, Warden."
"It’s Vanessa. The surveillance cameras showed her lying in bed three minutes ago. But the medical team went in for the mandatory 0600 glucose draw. When they pulled the bedsheets back... it wasn't her."
Nathan leaned over the phone, his heart hammering against his ribs. "What do you mean it wasn't her?!"
May you like
"It was a cadaver," the Warden replied, his voice breaking with sheer disbelief. "A female corpse with the facial skin surgically peeled away and grafted with Vanessa's dental records. The body is cold. She’s been dead for at least three weeks. Vanessa was never in that cell, Agent Kane. We’ve been guarding a slaughtered decoy from day one."
