Chapter 8 - The Viper Strikes Back

The darkness in the subterranean service corridor was so absolute it felt like a physical weight pressing against the skin.

Only the narrow, tactical beams of Arthur and Marcus’s LED flashlights pierced the gloom, illuminating thick plumes of stagnant dust.

"Keep your lights low," Marcus commanded in a hushed, gravelly whisper, sweeping his weapon across the junction ahead.

"They've killed the primary estate generators and switched the security sub-grid to isolated battery reserves."

Clara whimpered, her hands clutching Emma's waist as the younger maid guided her along the slick stone wall.

"Emma, I can't walk fast," Clara pleaded, her bare feet bleeding from small fragments of glass scattered across the path.

"You have to leave me, please... they'll kill us both if they catch us in these tunnels!"

Emma stopped dead in her tracks, turning to face Clara with an expression of fierce, unbreakable determination.

"I was on my knees barking like a dog twenty minutes ago because I had nobody to stand with me," Emma whispered firmly.

"Arthur showed me that evil only wins when good people choose to crawl in the mud."

"I am never getting on my knees again, Clara, and neither are you."

Emma knelt down, tore two long strips of heavy cotton from the lining of Arthur’s blazer, and wrapped them securely around Clara's feet.

Up ahead, Arthur knelt beside the junction panel, studying the emergency evacuation schematic stamped onto the steel plating.

"Marcus, how many men does Belmont have on her private security payroll tonight?" Arthur asked without turning his head.

"Officially, six licensed resort guards," Marcus replied, checking the magazine of his sidearm with practiced muscle memory.

"Unofficially, she brought in eight private contractors from an overseas private maritime security outfit under the guise of VIP escorts."

"They carry suppressed submachine guns and tactical night-vision optics."

"Julian, who gave the order to kill the sub-level lights?" Arthur demanded, stepping over the prostrate manager.

Julian refused to answer, spitting a mouthful of blood toward the billionaire's shoes with a defiant glare.

"She’s sealing the tunnel outlets, Vance," Julian rasped with a sick grin.

"You think this is just about money?"

"Victoria Belmont sold fifty-one percent of the resort's operational equity to a syndicate out of Singapore two weeks ago."

"Your original family trust was liquidated using forged signatures while you were in isolation in Switzerland."

"If you walk out of these tunnels, her entire offshore empire collapses before the market opens tomorrow morning."

"She has zero intention of letting a single person in this basement see the sunrise."

Arthur did not flinch; the revelation of corporate treason only seemed to harden his already formidable posture.

"Then she has severely miscalculated the price of her greed," Arthur stated smoothly.

Suddenly, a bright green tracer beam cut through the thick air fifty yards down the western branch of the service tunnel.

"CONTACT!" Marcus barked, grabbing Arthur by the shoulder and shoving him behind a concrete support pillar.

A rapid burst of suppressed automatic gunfire tore through the corridor, chipping fist-sized chunks of concrete from the wall.

The supersonic cracks of the rounds echoed violently through the narrow subterranean space, deafening everyone inside.

Emma threw herself over Clara, shielding the trembling girl against the floor as dust and shrapnel rained down on them.

Marcus returned fire with three deliberate, measured shots from his tactical pistol, driving the unseen shooter back around the corner.

"Two hostiles in the junction!" Marcus shouted, dropping his empty magazine and slamming a fresh one home in a single second.

"They have night-vision gear; our flashlight beams are giving away our firing lanes!"

"Kill the lights!" Arthur ordered instantly, shutting off his torch and plunging the corner into complete darkness once again.

In the pitch-black hallway, only the faint smell of burned cordite and ozone lingered in the stale air.

Emma’s breathing was rapid, but her mind was operating with razor-sharp clarity born from years of working within the mansion's walls.

"Mr. Vance," Emma whispered, her voice barely louder than the ambient hiss of the water pipes above them.

"Yes, Emma?" Arthur responded calmly from behind the concrete pillar.

"Behind this wall is the industrial hot water distribution line for the southern thermal spa pools."

"The main pressure override wheel is located inside the utility closet five feet to your left."

"If you open that valve completely, the steam discharge pipe vents directly into the junction where they are shooting from!"

Arthur paused in the darkness, a dark, appreciative smile spreading across his battle-hardened features.

"Marcus, cover the utility door," Arthur said, reaching out blindly until his fingers found the cold steel handle of the supply hatch.

"Let us remind Mrs. Belmont's mercenaries that this house was built by a Vance."
