Chapter 14 - The Sovereign Confrontation

The command bridge of the Sovereign Dawn felt like the eye of an apocalyptic hurricane.
Outside the bulletproof panoramic windshield, twenty-foot Atlantic waves crashed over the yacht’s pointed bow.
Inside, the only sound was the low hum of the navigation consoles and Lily’s muffled, terrified whimpers.
Arthur Vance stepped into the red-lit chamber, the heavy MPX submachine gun held firmly in his steady hands.
His tailored suit was soaked through, plastered to his broad shoulders, but his eyes carried the weight of pure execution.
"Let the child go, Cross," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a low, resonant growl that vibrated above the storm.
"Your offshore accounts are frozen."
"Your mansion is surrounded by federal tactical teams."
"Victoria is currently sitting in the back of a state police transport van, facing thirty years without parole."
"There is no escape route."
"There is no buyer waiting for you in the Caribbean."
"It's over."
Jonathan Cross let out a wild, ragged laugh that echoed madness across the bridge.
His fingers tightened visibly on the trigger of the revolver pressed against Lily’s small forehead.
"You still think like a corporate executive, Arthur!" Cross sneered, saliva flying from his lips.
"You think this is about money? You think this was about Julian’s pathetic little blackmail tapes?"
"I built Vance Enterprises with you!"
"For twenty-five years, I sat in your shadow while the world praised Arthur Vance, the great humanitarian billionaire!"
"I did the dirty work! I handled the syndicates! I secured the offshore real estate through blood and coercion!"
"And when I asked for forty percent equity, you gave me a lecture on ethics and threatened to audit my accounts!"
Arthur didn't blink.
"You were embezzling funds from our pension funds to finance human trafficking rings through the resort marina, Jonathan."
"You weren't an executive; you were a predator hiding behind a balance sheet."
"And I should have put you in the ground the day I found out."
Julian Belmont stepped forward, his sneering, arrogant face twisted into an ugly mask of spite.
"You talk too much, old man," Julian mocked, holding up the black remote detonator.
"Do you know what's sitting directly below the master bridge deck?"
"Four hundred pounds of military-grade C4 wired directly into the ship's fuel distribution lines."
"The second my thumb releases this dead-man switch, this entire vessel will vaporize into a thousand pieces."
"Cross and I have the only two survival exposure suits and the satellite beacon."
"You are going to drop that rifle, kneel on this carpet, and watch us take everything you love."
"Just like your little maid knelt in front of Victoria tonight."
Suddenly, a soft, deliberate click sounded from the shadows directly behind Julian's head.
Julian froze, the smug grin instantly vanishing from his bruised face.
"I wouldn't advise moving that thumb, Mr. Belmont," a crystal-clear, steady voice whispered into Julian’s ear.
Emma stepped out from the bridge's emergency avionics locker.
She was holding the heavy steel emergency crowbar, its sharpened pry-edge resting millimeters from Julian's carotid artery.
In her other hand, she held an open bottle of ninety percent industrial electrical solvent from the maintenance kit.
"You forgot one detail about the Sovereign Dawn, Julian," Emma said, her voice dripping with ice-cold confidence.
"The bridge's primary fire suppression system uses chemical Halon 1301."
"And the manual override discharge valve is right behind your feet."
Before Julian could react, Emma drove the heavy steel crowbar downward with blinding, ferocious speed.
The heavy point pierced the brass release valve on the floor.
PHSSSSSSSSHHHT!
A blinding, sub-zero cloud of pressurized white extinguishing gas erupted into Julian’s face with deafening force.
The extreme pressure ripped the remote detonator straight out of Julian’s fingers, sending it clattering across the deck.
Julian screamed in agony, clutching his frozen, chemical-blinded eyes as he staggered backward into the radar console.
Cross turned in utter shock, his gun momentarily swinging away from Lily toward Emma.
That fraction of a second was all Arthur Vance needed.
With the terrifying speed of an apex predator, the sixty-five-year-old billionaire closed the five-foot distance between them.
Arthur's left hand clamped down over the cylinder of Cross's revolver, preventing the hammer from cycling.
His right fist, hardened by decades of unyielding discipline, drove directly into Cross's solar plexus.
The air exploded from Cross's lungs in a violent gasp.
Arthur twisted the weapon violently outward, snapping Cross's index finger inside the trigger guard with a sickening crack.
The revolver fell to the deck and slid under the navigation desk.
Cross roared in pain, but he was a massive, desperate man fighting for his survival.
He threw his heavy shoulder into Arthur’s chest, slamming the older billionaire hard against the heavy glass windshield.
The glass groaned under the impact, spiderweb cracks spreading across the outer layer.
Lily shrieked in terror as the chair wobbled dangerously toward the edge of the lower helm stairs.
"Emma! The child!" Arthur yelled, locking his fingers into Cross’s coat collar as the two men wrestled violently.
Emma didn't hesitate; she dove across the slick floor, catching the falling swivel chair just inches from the iron stairs.
She shielded Lily with her own body, pulling the child against her chest and quickly ripping the gag from her mouth.
"I’ve got you, Lily!" Emma whispered fiercely, holding the trembling girl tight.
"You're safe! I won't let anyone hurt you!"
"Grandpa!" Lily sobbed, burying her tear-streaked face into Emma's uniform.
Meanwhile, Julian, despite his blinded eyes, was crawling along the floor like a rabid animal, his hands sweeping wildly.
His fingers brushed against the chrome handle of the fallen revolver.
"I'll kill you all!" Julian screamed, his sightless, burned eyes weeping blood as he pointed the barrel toward Emma and Lily.
"EMMA, LOOK OUT!" Arthur bellowed.
Emma spun around, using her own back as a human shield over the seven-year-old girl.
BANG!
The deafening gunshot shattered the air inside the enclosed bridge.
The bullet tore through the wooden helm station, splintering teak into the air just inches above Emma's shoulder.
Before Julian could pull the trigger a second time, Arthur kicked Cross backward and lunged toward the blinded manager.
Arthur’s heavy combat boot came down with crushing, merciless precision directly onto Julian’s wrist.
CRUNCH!
The bones shattered instantly beneath the billionaire's heel, the revolver sliding harmlessly away into the corner.
Julian shrieked in absolute, pathetic agony, clutching his crushed wrist as he curled into a fetal position on the deck.
"You forced her to bark like an animal," Arthur whispered down at him, his voice colder than the Atlantic depths.
"Now look at you."
"Whimpering in the dirt like the coward you have always been."
Arthur kicked the groaning manager hard in the ribs, knocking him unconscious against the bulkhead.
Suddenly, a heavy iron fire axe sliced down through the air where Arthur had stood a split second before.
It was Cross.
The former CFO had pulled the emergency axe from the wall mount, his face twisted in a murderous, psychotic snarl.
May you like
"If I'm going to hell tonight, Arthur..." Cross screamed, swinging the axe in a wide, vicious arc.
"...you're coming down to the bottom of the ocean with me!"
