Chapter 4 - The Vanishing at Villa Solitude

The metallic click of six security sidearms echoing across the terrace instantly silenced whatever lingering whispers remained among the guests.
The towering iron gates at the end of the long cobblestone driveway slammed shut with a heavy, final reverberation.
Victoria Vance clutched the wet fabric of her soaked gown against her chest, her teeth chattering uncontrollably from cold and sheer terror.
"Arthur, you cannot do this! My family owns twenty percent of the holding company that finances this entire resort branch!" Victoria yelled, her voice trembling.
Arthur Montgomery took three slow, deliberate steps toward her, his eyes cold and lifeless as granite gravestones.
"Your family *used* to own twenty percent, Victoria," Arthur said with absolute, crushing calmness.
"At eight o'clock this morning, I completed the full acquisition of your father’s bankrupt mining syndicate," Arthur continued coldly.
"Every single asset, every piece of real estate, and every offshore account your family possesses now belongs exclusively to Montgomery Holdings."
Victoria’s eyes stretched wide in horror as her knees buckled slightly, the last shred of her social status disintegrating before her eyes.
"You... you bought my father out?" she whispered, the reality of her total ruin crashing down upon her shoulders.
"You are not a hostess here, Victoria. You are a trespasser standing on my private land, abusing my staff and kidnapping innocent women," Arthur stated.
He turned away from her as if she were nothing more than a stain on the terrace floor and looked down at Julian Sterling.
Julian was still curled beside the overturned chair, trembling like an abandoned dog, shivering in his soiled designer suit.
"Get up, Sterling," Arthur commanded with an authority that allowed for zero hesitation or resistance.
Julian scrambled to his feet instantly, his knees knocking together, keeping his eyes glued to the stone pavers to avoid Arthur's gaze.
"Tell me what happened six months ago, or I will hand you over to the federal authorities with every piece of data on this device," Arthur said.
Julian swallowed hard, his throat bobbing as he stole a panicked glance at the silent, horrified guests watching from the edge.
"I... I was only following orders from Victoria's husband, Richard Vance," Julian stammered, his words tumbling out in a frantic rush.
Emma stepped forward, her hands clenched into fists, ignoring the stinging pain of her torn skin as anger overtook her sorrow.
"What did Clara do to you? Why did you lock my sister in a cage?" Emma demanded, her voice ringing with raw emotional agony.
Julian flinched at the sound of Emma’s voice, unable to maintain the cruel, mocking persona he had worn just ten minutes earlier.
"She was working the private executive dinner in the east pavilion," Julian confessed, his voice breaking into pitiful whimpers.
"She went to the back office to return a lost gold watch left on one of the VIP dining tables."
"Richard Vance and Victoria were inside, arguing over the offshore shell companies and the forged safety audit files for the northern mines."
"Richard had the original accounting ledger open on the desk, showing millions of dollars embezzled from the workers' pension funds."
"Clara walked in, saw the papers, and heard Richard threatening to burn down the audit office to destroy the paper trail."
"Before she could run, Victoria caught her by the hair, and Richard ordered me to drag her down into the old wine vault."
Emma’s breath hitched in her throat as the horrific picture formed in her mind of her gentle, hardworking sister being ambushed in the dark.
"We told the police she stole ten thousand dollars from the safe and fled the state," Julian sobbed, tears cutting through the mustard on his cheeks.
"We staged her locker, put cash in her apartment, and hired private investigators to feed false leads to the local precinct."
"We only meant to keep her down there until the merger was finalized, but Richard kept delaying the transfer of funds!"
Victoria lunged forward, her nails bared once more, screaming like a wounded animal at the manager who had just betrayed her.
"Shut up, you pathetic coward! You swore you would keep your mouth shut! I paid you fifty thousand dollars!" Victoria shrieked.
A security guard stepped smoothly in front of Victoria, catching her by the wrists and twisting them behind her back with effortless precision.
The plastic zip-ties clicked tightly around her wrists, rendering the once-proud millionaire completely helpless and physically restrained.
"You will rot in a federal penitentiary for the rest of your miserable life, Victoria," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper.
Arthur turned back to the phone screen, tapping through the subfolders until he found the live environmental monitoring feed for the subterranean sector.
The screen displayed a digital temperature readout for Vault Seven: sixty-two degrees Fahrenheit, oxygen levels stable, door lock engaged.
Below the readout was a live video stream showing Clara Campbell curled on the thin cot, motionless, her back turned to the camera.
Emma let out a sharp cry, reaching out to touch the tiny image of her sister through the cracked glass screen.
"She isn't moving... Mr. Montgomery, why isn't she moving?" Emma cried, panic rising like bile in her throat.
Arthur examined the display closely, noticing a flashing yellow indicator light in the upper corner of the surveillance app.
The indicator read: MANUAL VENTILATION OVERRIDE ACTIVATED — PURGE SEQUENCE COMMENCING IN 15 MINUTES.
Julian looked up at the screen, saw the flashing yellow light, and let out a bloodcurdling scream of pure terror.
"Richard! Richard is down there right now!" Julian shrieked, clutching his head in wild panic.
"He set the industrial halon fire-suppression system to purge the oxygen from the sub-vaults to destroy all evidence of her existence!"
Arthur Montgomery’s face transformed into an expression of thunderous fury that terrified even his seasoned security guards.
"Marcus!" Arthur roared to the head of his personal security team, a massive scarred man standing near the pavilion entrance.
"Bring the hydraulic breach kit and the master override keys to the cliffside elevator immediately!" Arthur commanded.

Arthur looked down at Emma, taking her bloodied, trembling hand into his own strong, unwavering grasp.
"Stay by my side, Emma. We are going to bring your sister home right now, or I will tear this mountain apart with my bare hands."
