Chapter 3 - The Echo from the Locked Vault

The desperate cry for help echoed through the patio speakers for three agonizing seconds before Julian managed to swipe his leg out.

In a desperate burst of adrenaline, Julian kicked upward, knocking Arthur’s hand and sending the phone skittering across the flagstones.

The audio abruptly disconnected as the phone hit the edge of a marble planter, plunging the entire terrace into a suffocating silence.

Dozens of party guests stood frozen with their drinks halfway to their mouths, their faces pale with shock and confusion.

None of them understood the context of the horrifying scream, but everyone could feel the sudden, suffocating atmosphere of dread.

Victoria, still standing waist-deep in the swimming pool with mascara running down her cheeks, stopped thrashing and stared at Julian.

"What in God's name was that noise, Julian?" Victoria demanded, her voice shaking with an unfamiliar tremor of anxiety.

Julian did not answer her; he was scrambling across the patio on his belly like a cornered snake, clawing toward the phone.

"It was nothing! A viral video from an internet prank show! Just a stupid joke!" Julian screamed, his voice pitching into hysteria.

He reached the planter and raised his heavy leather heel to stomp the device into tiny unrecoverable pieces.

Before his shoe could crush the glass, Emma moved with a speed born of pure, primal desperation.

She threw herself forward, disregarding the pain in her scraped knees and torn hands, and snatched the phone from under his descending boot.

The heel grazed her forearm, but Emma clutched the device tightly against her chest, rolling backward onto the stone terrace.

"Give that back to me, you worthless little thief!" Julian roared, lunging forward with his hands outstretched like claws.

He never reached her.

Arthur Montgomery stepped directly into Julian’s path, his large hand snapping around Julian’s throat with iron grip precision.

Julian’s forward momentum stopped instantly, his eyes bulging as Arthur lifted him slightly off the ground by his collar and neck.

"Touch her again, and you will leave this cliffside in a body bag," Arthur whispered with cold, lethal conviction.

Arthur shoved Julian backward with disdain, sending the manager crashing into an empty wrought-iron patio chair that flipped over.

Julian curled into a ball on the flagstones, clutching his throat and coughing violently while gasping for air.

Arthur turned toward Emma, whose hands were trembling so violently that the smartphone rattled against her chest.

Tears were streaming down Emma’s face, not from physical pain or humiliation, but from the sudden, overwhelming shock of recognition.

"That was Clara... that was my sister," Emma sobbed, her voice barely louder than a whisper against the ocean wind.

Arthur knelt beside her once more, his stern face softening as he looked into her devastated, pleading eyes.

"Are you certain of this, Emma?" Arthur asked gently, using her real name for the first time after reading her nametag.

"I would know her voice anywhere in this world! She went missing six months ago after taking a catering shift here!" Emma cried out.

A collective gasp rippled through the guests who were still lingering near the perimeter of the terrace.

Victoria scrambled toward the pool stairs, her heavy soaked dress dragging water across the tiles as she stepped onto the patio.

"She is lying! She is a delusional maid trying to extort us because she dropped a tray of food!" Victoria shrieked, shivering from the cold.

"Shut your mouth, Victoria," Arthur commanded without even looking in her direction, his voice carrying the authority of an absolute monarch.

Arthur held out his hand to Emma, who hesitated for half a second before placing the unlocked smartphone into his large palm.

Julian watched the transfer of the device with absolute despair, burying his face in his hands as he began to weep in sheer panic.

"It wasn't my idea... they forced me to do it... they promised me a promotion," Julian muttered incoherently into the stone floor.

Arthur tapped the screen to open the video gallery, bypassing the superficial photos of luxury cars and party setups.

Hidden inside a secure vault folder that had been left open during the accident was a series of time-stamped video files from late autumn.

Arthur pressed play on the most recent recording, holding the screen so both he and Emma could see the footage.

The video was grainy, shot through the narrow observation window of a heavy, industrial-grade steel door reinforced with iron crossbars.

Inside the dimly lit concrete room, a young woman with long auburn hair sat huddled on a thin cot, wrapped in a coarse wool blanket.

Around her neck hung an identical silver swallow locket, matching the one currently resting against Emma’s trembling collarbone.

The woman in the recording looked up at the camera with hollow, sunken eyes, her cheeks pale and stained with dried tears.

"Please, Julian, I didn't see anything in the financial books, I swear!" the woman cried out, pounding her fists against the steel door.

"Just let me go home to Emma! She needs her medicine! She doesn't have anyone else in this world!" the voice pleaded on the video.

Emma covered her mouth with her bloodied hands, a guttural sob tearing from the depths of her soul.

"Clara... oh God, Clara is alive... she's been trapped here this whole time," Emma wept, falling against Arthur’s arm.

Arthur Montgomery’s jaw set into stone, his knuckles turning stark white as his grip threatened to shatter the phone’s casing.

He recognized the concrete walls and the specific industrial hinges visible in the corners of the camera frame.

That reinforced room was not located in some distant warehouse across the city or in a remote cabin in the woods.

It was part of the original wine cellars built into the subterranean bedrock directly beneath the very terrace where they were standing.

Arthur slowly raised his head, his gray eyes locking onto Victoria Vance, who had frozen mid-step near the pool edge.

"You turned my estate's historic foundation into a private prison to cover up your crimes, Victoria?" Arthur spoke, his voice dripping with venom.

Victoria took a trembling step backward, her arrogance completely evaporating into sheer, paralyzing terror.

"Arthur, listen to me, you don't understand the full situation... she stole confidential company financial records!" Victoria lied desperately.

Arthur stood up to his full height, towering over the ruined party like a vengeful titan ready to pass final judgment.

"Security! Seal every single gate and exit on this perimeter immediately!" Arthur bellowed toward the estate's private security team.

Six armed guards wearing dark suits appeared instantly from the perimeter pathways, their weapons drawn and faces unyielding.

"Nobody leaves this cliffside until every secret buried beneath this ground is brought into the light," Arthur declared with thunderous finality.
