Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Arrogant

Arthur Montgomery did not flinch, blink, or take a single panicked step backward as the fist came flying toward his jaw.

Decades of military discipline and elite self-defense training took over within a fraction of a millisecond.

With effortless elegance, Arthur shifted his weight six inches to the left, allowing Julian’s wild punch to slice harmlessly through empty air.

Before Julian could recover his balance, Arthur drove his palm squarely into the center of the younger man’s chest with bone-jarring force.

Julian gasped as the breath was violently expelled from his lungs, his leather-soled shoes losing all purchase on the polished floor.

The momentum sent Julian hurtling backward like a ragdoll straight into the twenty-foot banquet table.

A deafening crash echoed across the terrace as the heavy wooden table buckled beneath his crashing weight.

Elaborate silver candelabras toppled over, sending molten wax splashing across the silk tablecloths.

Towers of hand-cut crystal glasses shattered into thousands of glittering fragments that rained down all over Julian’s body.

Platters of chilled jumbo shrimp, bowls of dark cocktail sauce, and half-melted ice sculptures collapsed on top of his expensive tailored suit.

Julian lay sprawled among the wreckage, sputtering and wheezing with a crushed prawn stuck to his cheek and broken glass in his hair.

A horrified gasp rippled through the spectators, who backed away in genuine terror from the furious sixty-five-year-old billionaire.

Victoria Vance watched her manager lie groaning in the ruined banquet with her jaw dropped in absolute disbelief.

Her embarrassment quickly mutated into a blinding, hysterical rage that eradicated whatever rational thought she possessed.

"You violent lunatic! I will have you arrested and destroyed for this!" Victoria screamed, her voice reaching a piercing register.

Blind with fury, Victoria lunged forward, her sharp acrylic nails aimed straight for Arthur’s throat.

She intended to tear his face open, but Arthur simply stood firm as an immovable iron pillar.

Just as Victoria reached him, the slick combination of spilled champagne and oily salad dressing caught the bottom of her six-inch stiletto.

Her foot shot forward unpredictably, completely stripping her of all equilibrium and control.

Her arms flailed wildly in the air, knocking over a nearby brass ice bucket that sent cubes rolling everywhere.

With a bloodcurdling shriek, Victoria plunged backward off the terrace edge and straight into the deep end of the infinity swimming pool.

An enormous wall of water erupted toward the sky, soaking half a dozen front-row guests who shrieked in horror.

Victoria surfaced instantly, sputtering chlorinated water, her five-thousand-dollar designer gown clinging heavily to her thrashing limbs.

Her elaborate hairdo collapsed into a soggy mess of false extensions that clung to her face like wet seaweed.

The crowd stood frozen in stunned silence, completely unsure of whether to dive in or run for the nearest estate exit.

Arthur Montgomery did not waste another second looking at the sputtering heiress or the broken manager in the appetizers.

He slowly dropped down to one knee beside Emma, his expression transforming instantly from terrifying wrath to profound tenderness.

"Take a deep breath, child. You are safe now, and nobody will ever lay a hand on you again," Arthur said softly.

Emma looked up into the billionaire’s weathered face, her chest heaving as she struggled to comprehend what was happening.

Arthur produced an immaculate white linen handkerchief from his breast pocket and gently wrapped it around her bleeding right palm.

He placed a steady, reassuring hand under her elbow and carefully helped her rise to her feet on the safe dry stones.

"Can you stand, young lady?" Arthur asked with genuine fatherly concern shining in his gray eyes.

"I... I can stand, sir, thank you... thank you so much," Emma stammered, wiping away a stray tear with her trembling sleeve.

As Emma leaned against him for support, her unbuttoned uniform collar shifted slightly to the side.

A delicate silver chain slipped out from beneath her shirt, revealing a small, intricately carved locket shaped like a swallow in flight.

Arthur’s breath caught in his throat the exact moment his eyes landed on that tiny piece of worn silver jewelry.

His sharp gaze locked onto the silver swallow, his fingers twitching slightly as if jolted by an invisible electric current.

Before Arthur could ask a single question about the necklace, a muffled groan came from the collapsed buffet table behind them.

Julian Sterling was crawling out from beneath the broken tabletop on his hands and knees, dripping with cocktail sauce and mustard.

Despite his battered ribs and stained clothing, Julian’s left hand was desperately reaching for his modern smartphone lying on the stones.

The phone had landed screen-up on a dry patch of marble five feet away from where Emma and Arthur stood.

Arthur turned his head toward the crawling manager, his eyes instantly noticing the blinking red icon on the phone's screen.

"Leave the phone right where it is," Arthur ordered in a voice as cold and sharp as a winter blizzard.

Julian froze mid-crawl, his face instantly draining of all remaining color until he looked like a walking corpse.

Instead of obeying, Julian made a desperate, panicked lunge across the tiles, clawing his fingers toward the glass screen.

He was not trying to save his expensive device; he was terrified of what was stored inside its digital memory.

"Don't touch that! It’s my personal property! You have no right!" Julian shrieked in a voice brimming with raw panic.

Arthur took one calm, authoritative stride forward and planted his polished leather oxford squarely onto Julian’s reaching wrist.

The pressure was firm and unyielding, pinning Julian's arm to the stone without snapping the bone beneath.

Julian cried out in pain and defeat, his fingers trembling merely inches away from the illuminated screen.

Arthur bent down with fluid grace and picked up the smartphone between his thumb and forefinger.

His expression darkened into something deadly as he glanced at the notification bar and the video player displayed on the interface.

"Let us see what kind of sick entertainment you find so fascinating, Mr. Sterling," Arthur said, his tone chilling the terrace air.

Julian began to violently shake, his eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror as Arthur’s thumb hovered over the playback controls.

"No, please, don't press that! I'm begging you, Mr. Montgomery, don't look at that folder!" Julian wept from the ground.

Arthur ignored the pathetic plea and tapped the screen, but his trembling thumb accidentally selected a cached audio file in the quick-access menu.

The phone instantly paired with the terrace’s high-power surround-sound Bluetooth speakers that were still active above the pool.

A split second of crackling static hissed through the high-end speakers mounted all around the stone columns.

Then, a woman’s terrified, desperate voice blasted across the entire estate with heartbreaking clarity.

"HELP ME! PLEASE, DON'T LOCK THE DOOR!" the voice screamed, accompanied by violent pounding on solid metal.

The sound echoed off the cliffside, bouncing across the water and penetrating straight into Emma’s very soul.

Emma’s entire body went rigid, her pupils dilating as a wave of pure ice washed over her veins.

May you like

She recognized that voice better than her own heartbeat.

It was the voice of Clara, her twenty-four-year-old sister who had mysteriously vanished without a trace six months ago.
