Chapter 20 - THE UNFINISHED CALL

Detective Miller broke the rusted latch with a crowbar. Inside the box lay a leather-bound journal and a satellite tracking transponder, its green LED light blinking steadily in the gloom.
Lily knelt down. Her hands were completely steady now. The grief, the shock, the twenty-year illusion of her father’s innocence had burned away, leaving only pure, crystalline resolve.
She opened the journal.
Inside was her mother’s handwriting. The final entry, dated the night before her death, read:
*If you are reading this, Lily, know that Daniel was weak, but Julian was the architect. Forgive your father if you can, but never let Julian near Rachel’s bloodline. The money in Zurich is not real. It was always a beacon to draw him out. The real trust is you.*
Beneath the journal lay a small black burner phone.
At that exact second, the burner phone began to ring.
The sound was piercing, shrill, cutting through the heavy air of the shattered greenhouse.
Detective Miller reached for his weapon. "Don't touch it, Ms. Sterling."
Lily ignored him. She picked up the phone and pressed the green button, lifting it to her ear.
"It's over, Julian," Lily said, her voice hard as diamond. "Marcus is arrested. The box is excavated. The police have the ledger."
A low, dry, rattling chuckle echoed through the receiver—the sound of an old man drawing his final, venomous breaths through an oxygen cannula.
*"You found the ledger, Lily. How poetic,"* Julian Vance whispered from wherever he was hiding in the shadows of the world. *"My brother was always such a coward. But you... you have Rachel’s steel. You think Marcus was my only play tonight?"*
Lily’s heart seized. "What did you do?"
*"Look toward the gate, Lily."*
Lily turned toward the great glass wall of the greenhouse, looking out past the swimming pool, past the line of police cruisers with their strobes painting the mist in violent flashes of crimson and cobalt.
At the edge of the woods, completely beyond the perimeter of the state troopers, two high-beam headlights flared to life in the darkness.
A black heavy-duty SUV sat idling silently on the service road.
And through the open window of the vehicle, illuminated by the pale dashboard light, sat a woman holding a small child’s yellow dress in her lap.
A woman whose face was identical to Vanessa's—yet thirty years younger.

*"Meet Sophie, Lily,"* Julian's voice rasped into her ear as the SUV’s engine roared to life. *"Your stepmother’s daughter. Did you really think Vanessa told you the whole truth before she died?"*
The tires of the black SUV shrieked against the wet asphalt, lunging forward into the estate.
