Chapter 15 - THE BREACH AT ORCHARD RIDGE

The drive back to Westchester was a blur of hydroplaning tires and blinding rain. Lily dialed Daniel’s phone repeatedly, but the call routed directly to voicemail: *"Daniel Vance. Please leave a message."*

"Answer, damn you, Dad, answer!" Lily screamed, slamming her palm against the steering wheel as the wipers struggled against the deluge.

She dialed Claire’s mobile. It rang four times before clicking open.

"Claire!" Lily shouted over the speakerphone.

There was no voice. Only the sound of heavy, deliberate footsteps on hardwood floor, followed by the faint, muffled hum of a VHF radio.

"Claire, get Rachel and get to the panic room in the basement!" Lily urged. "Marcus isn't who he says he is! He's Julian’s son!"

A man’s voice, smooth, baritone, and utterly calm, answered the phone.

*"Hello, Lily. You always were remarkably perceptive for a girl who almost drowned in four feet of water."*

Marcus.

Lily slammed the brakes as she crested the hill overlooking Orchard Ridge. In the distance, her family home sat cloaked in darkness. Every exterior lantern had been killed. The pool house was pitch black.

"Where is my father?" Lily demanded, her knuckles white around the wheel.

*"Daniel is resting in his study,"* Marcus replied pleasantly. *"He had quite an emotional reaction when I showed him the complete financial forensic audit of the foundation. He’s tied to his drafting chair, Lily. He’s alive, assuming his heart holds out. Claire was slightly more combative, so she’s locked in the wine cellar."*

"And Rachel Grace?" Lily’s voice trembled with motherly rage so violent it tasted like copper. "If you lay a single finger on my daughter, Marcus, I will tear you apart with my bare hands."

*"Your daughter is currently sleeping peacefully in her bed,"* Marcus said, his tone chillingly affectionate. *"Such a beautiful child. She looks just like you did at five years old. The same golden hair. The same fragile little lungs."*

Lily felt the air leave her chest. "What do you want?"

*"You have the key, Lily. Vanessa told my father you visited her tonight. You have the clover key from Zurich. I have the second key from your mother's desk. Bring it to the pool deck. Alone. If I see a single flashing siren or hear a police chopper, Rachel Grace takes a midnight swim. And unlike twenty years ago... there will be no key at the bottom to save her."*

The line went dead.

Lily threw the car into park at the edge of the private drive, bypassing the main gate. She reached into the glove compartment, pulled out Daniel’s spare tactical flashlight, and retrieved an antique, steel-nosed drafting compass from her work bag—the sharpest tool she possessed.

She slipped through the sodden hedges, moving through the blackness toward the pool.
