Chapter 14 - THE HOSPICE CONFESSION

The rain transformed into a driving torrent as Lily’s SUV tore along the Taconic State Parkway. Daniel had insisted on coming, but Lily had ordered him to stay at the house with Claire and hire round-the-clock armed private security for Rachel Grace. For the first time in her life, Lily was the protector, not the protected.
The Bedford Hills Hospice Wing smelled of industrial bleach, boiled cabbage, and dying flowers. Fluorescent lights flickered along the green linoleum hallway as a correctional guard escorted Lily to Room 104.
Behind the heavy, magnetic-lock door lay Vanessa.
The woman who had once occupied the covers of Manhattan high-society magazines, who had smelled of French perfume and venom, was now a skeleton wrapped in yellowed paper skin. Clear plastic tubes snaked into her nostrils; her hair was a sparse, white wisp clinging to an age-spotted scalp.
Yet, when her sunken eyes shifted toward the doorway and locked onto Lily, a spark of electric terror ignited in them.
"You came," Vanessa breathed, her chest rattling with fluid.
Lily did not sit in the plastic visitor's chair. She walked straight to the edge of the metal bed frame, pulled the tarnished brass key from her trench coat pocket, and placed it onto the rolling meal tray with a heavy *thud*.
Vanessa shrank back against her thin pillow as if the key were red-hot iron. "Where did you get that?"
"It was delivered to my house tonight. In a box addressed to my daughter," Lily said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal cadence. "Talk, Vanessa. You have maybe forty-eight hours left on this earth. Do you want to die with Julian Vance’s blood on your soul?"
Vanessa closed her eyes, tears leaking through the deep crevices of her crow’s feet. "Julian never died, Lily. The plane crash in Maine... it was an offshore fisherman's hull loaded with medical waste and a dental record swap. He paid fifty thousand dollars to a crooked county coroner."
"Where is he?"
"He’s in Manhattan," Vanessa gasped, clutching at her hospital gown over her heart. "He took a new identity. Marcus Vance. He claimed he was Julian’s long-lost illegitimate son. Daniel welcomed him into the architectural firm three years ago! He let him audit the family trusts!"
Lily’s blood turned to liquid nitrogen. *Marcus.*
The brilliant, soft-spoken senior associate architect Daniel had mentored. The young man who had attended family dinners at their home. The man who had sat at the edge of the pool last summer, handing juice boxes to Rachel Grace.
"Marcus is Julian?" Lily asked, nausea rising in her throat.
"Marcus is Julian’s biological son, trained by Julian to finish what we botched twenty years ago," Vanessa coughed violently, spitting flecks of blood onto a paper napkin. "Julian is living in a penthouse in Tribeca. He is dying of renal failure, Lily. He needs the offshore accounts that your mother locked away in the Zurich vault. The accounts only open with two keys turned simultaneously at the private depository on Wall Street."
"One key was in the pool," Lily whispered.
"And the second key was hidden inside Rachel’s original estate trunk, which Daniel handed over to Marcus last month for the family archive project!" Vanessa reached out with a claw-like hand, grabbing Lily’s sleeve with shocking strength. "You don't understand, Lily! Julian doesn't just want the money. He wants Rachel Grace."
Lily ripped her arm away. "Why my daughter?"
"Because Rachel’s trust was written with an iron-clad bloodline contingency! If you die before age thirty without a legal heir, the entire four-hundred-million-dollar corpus reverts to the surviving Vance male line—Julian and Marcus! But if your daughter reaches six years old next week, the trust locks permanently into an irrevocable foundation that neither Julian nor Marcus can ever touch!"
Vanessa collapsed back onto the mattress, monitors beeping erratically.

"The pool... wasn't about hate, Lily," Vanessa sobbed, her voice fading to a pitiful rattle. "Julian forced me. He told me if you died, no one would ever suspect him. He is a monster. And he is in your house right now."
