Chapter 18 - THE UNRAVELING

Within forty minutes, Orchard Ridge was saturated with red and blue emergency strobes. Paramedics wrapped Daniel and Claire in shock blankets on the front porch, while state troopers led Marcus Vance away in steel handcuffs, his clothes dripping pool water onto the gravel.
Daniel held Lily’s hand so tightly his knuckles were white. "Lily... you saved her. You saved all of us."
"It’s not over, Dad," Lily said, watching Marcus being shoved into the rear of a state cruiser. "Marcus said Julian had someone else. What was Julian’s end game?"
Detective Miller, a seasoned investigator who had worked the county for thirty years, approached the porch holding Marcus’s confiscated encrypted satellite phone in an evidence bag.
"Ms. Sterling," Miller said, his face grim under the flashing lights. "We just intercepted an automated transmission from this device. It was routed to a private medical suite at the Carlyle Hotel in Manhattan."
"Julian," Daniel gasped.
"The suite is registered to Julian Vance," Miller confirmed. "State police and NYPD Tactical just breached the room ten minutes ago."
Lily stepped forward. "Is he in custody?"
Miller shook his head slowly. "The room was empty, Ms. Sterling. His life support equipment, dialysis machines, medical records—everything was cleared out roughly two hours ago. But he left something on the desk addressed to your family."
"What?" Lily asked, her stomach twisting.
Miller held up a clear evidence envelope containing a small, handwritten note written on Carlyle stationery.
Lily read the trembling, elegant script:
*You taught the child well, Lily. But Rachel’s foundation was never about the money. Look beneath the floor of the greenhouse. What my brother buried twenty-five years ago cannot be bought off with brass keys.*
Daniel looked at the note and instantly stumbled backward, his breath catching in his throat as his eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated horror.

"Dad?" Lily turned to him, the cold mist swirling around them. "What does that mean? What did you bury beneath the greenhouse?"
