Chapter 16 - THE EDGE OF THE WATER

The rain had softened into a ghostly, drifting mist. The air around the pool hung thick and suffocating, smelling of damp flagstones, wet boxwood, and the sharp, chemical bite of freshly shocked water.

Lily stepped onto the travertine terrace.

The pool safety lights beneath the surface suddenly hummed to life, projecting a luminescent turquoise glow across the patio.

Standing at the deep end, wearing a heavy wax-cotton coat and holding Rachel Grace in his arms, was Marcus Vance. Rachel Grace was wrapped in her pink fleece blanket, her eyes wide with terror, a piece of industrial duct tape covering her mouth. Her tiny chest hitched with silent, desperate sobs.

Bound to an iron patio chair nearby was Daniel, a strip of cloth gagging his mouth, his face bruised, his eyes pleading wildly with Lily to run.

"Put her down, Marcus," Lily said, stepping into the turquoise glare. Her voice did not shake. The trembling had stopped the moment she saw her daughter.

"The key, Lily. Slide it across the stone." Marcus stepped closer to the edge, his boots hovering less than an inch from the dark water. Rachel Grace whimpered, burying her face into his jacket.

"You're making a mistake," Lily said, pulling the tarnished brass key from her pocket, holding it aloft between two fingers. "You think this key unlocks the Zurich accounts. You think Julian gets to live out his dying days in Monaco on Rachel's money."

Marcus smirked. "My father designed this plan before I was even born. He spent thirty years engineering the legal architecture of your family’s destruction. Give me the key, and I leave the child on the coping. Keep it, and she sinks."

"Your father lied to you, Marcus," Lily said, taking one slow, deliberate step forward.

"Don't move!" Marcus snapped, shifting Rachel Grace outward over the water. Daniel thrashing violently against his ropes, knocking his chair onto its side with a dull thud against the pavers.

"Look at the key, Marcus!" Lily held it up into the glare of the pool floodlight. "Look at the notches! This isn't the key to the Zurich trust. This is the master override to the safety deposit facility at First National Manhattan! The vault that requires biometric thumbprint verification from Rachel Sterling’s legal heir! My mother didn't put the money in Switzerland. She anticipated Julian's fraud twenty-five years ago!"

Marcus hesitated, his cold arrogance flickering for a fraction of a second. "You're lying. The courier consignment—"

"The consignment was triggered by Vanessa!" Lily yelled. "Vanessa spent her last six months in prison setting you and Julian up for federal grand larceny! If you drop that child, you kill the only person whose bloodline can open the vault next week!"

Marcus’s eyes darted between Lily’s steady gaze and the brass key in her hand. For three agonizing seconds, greed battled paranoia in his mind.
