Chapter 8 - The Price of a Stolen Heart

Before the mercenaries could pull their triggers, the rusted corrugated wall of the eastern naval dock collapsed inward with a deafening roar.

CRASH!

A fifty-ton industrial container forklift—its massive steel tines raised at head height—smashed through the perimeter like a rampaging prehistoric beast. Sitting in the high-armored cab, blood pouring down his face from a horrific head wound, was Marco.

"DIE, YOU BASTARDS!" Marco roared through the broken windshield.

The two-ton steel tines of the forklift slammed into two of Enzo’s mercenaries, crushing their torsos instantly against the opposite concrete pillar in an explosion of bone and metal. The forklift didn't stop; it plowed directly into the center of the clinic, scattering Enzo’s hit squad like bowling pins and overturning the heavy industrial shelving units into a barricade of falling steel and fire.

"Dominic! MOVE!"

It was Matteo.

The wounded federal agent had dragged himself across the floor, clutching his fractured ribs, and retrieved his dropped M4 carbine. Matteo opened fire on full auto, sending a thirty-round magazine of 5.56mm lead tearing through the smoke, driving Enzo and his remaining two mercenaries back into the burning corridor.

"Dom..." Sofia sobbed beneath him, her hands frantically pressing against the dark, pulsing wound in his shoulder, her fingers covered in his thick, crimson blood. "Dom, stay with me! Look at me! Don't you dare close your eyes!"

Dominic grunted, pushing himself up through sheer, terrifying willpower. His vision was tunneling, gray edges encroaching on his sight, but he looked down into his wife’s face.

"I didn't kill her, Sofia," Dominic wheezed, blood flecking his lips as he struggled to draw breath through a punctured lung. "I swear... on my mother’s grave... on whatever soul I have left... I didn't know Enzo murdered that girl. I thought... I thought it was an accident. I thought God had finally shown us mercy."

Sofia looked at him, her chest heaving, the cardiac monitor beside her screaming a frantic, continuous warning alarm.

She saw the bullet wound in his shoulder—a round meant for her forehead. She saw the absolute, naked truth in his eyes: the devastating, agonizing realization that the monster who had saved her life was not her husband, but the brother he had protected for thirty years.

"I know," she whispered, her voice breaking into a torrent of tears, her trembling, blood-stained fingers cupping his scarred cheek. "I know, Dominic. But you have to let me go. My heart... it’s failing. It can’t take this. If you stay here, you’ll die with me."

"Then I die with you," Dominic growled, his voice dropping into that deep, immovable bedrock of his will. "I conquered this city for you, Sofia. I’ll burn in hell with you before I let them take you."

Dominic turned toward the shattered rear wall that led out to the underground naval slipway.

The cold Atlantic water surged into the lower basin, where a high-speed black interceptor boat idled, tied to the rusted bollards—the boat Matteo had arranged for Sofia’s exfiltration.

"Matteo!" Dominic barked, his voice commanding even through the haze of imminent death. "Get her into the boat! NOW!"

Matteo limped forward, his face pale from internal bleeding, but he didn't hesitate. Together, the two men—the mafia king and the federal agent, bitter enemies bound by the fragile life of the woman they both loved—lifted Sofia from the gurney. Sofia cried out in pain as the movement pulled against her fresh sternal incision, but Dominic cradled her against his uninjured side, his body absorbing the shocks as they stumbled through the smoke toward the water.

Behind them, through the flames of the collapsed clinic, Enzo emerged from the debris.

Enzo’s suit was burned, his face black with soot, his eyes wild with demonic fury. He held a secondary submachine gun, his finger locked on the trigger, sweeping the barrel toward the slipway.

"DOMINIC!" Enzo shrieked over the roar of the fire. "YOU DON'T GET TO LEAVE! NEITHER OF YOU GETS TO LEAVE!"

Dominic thrust Sofia into Matteo’s arms at the edge of the concrete pier. "Get her in the cabin! Start the engines!"

"Dominic, what about you?!" Matteo shouted over the idling twin diesel motors of the interceptor.

Dominic didn't answer. He turned around, his Kimber .45 held firmly in his left hand, and walked back into the fire to meet his brother.
