Chapter 7 - The Judas Protocol

The concrete ceiling groaned as pulverized plaster and burning insulation rained down into the clinic. Dominic hit the floor hard, the air driven from his lungs, his Kimber sliding across the wet tiles.
He didn't stay down. Driven by pure, animalistic adrenaline, he scrambled through the shattered glass, ignoring the shards tearing through the palms of his hands.
"SOFIA!"
Through the thick, swirling gray smoke and the blinding orange glare of fire, Dominic saw Matteo shielding Sofia’s gurney with his own body, his M4 carbine raised toward the collapsed western wall.
Through the gaping breach in the building’s perimeter, silhouetted against the raging sleet and burning debris, stepped six heavily armed men. They were not federal agents in windbreakers. They wore unmarked black tactical gear, night-vision goggles, and carried suppressed submachine guns.
Leading them through the smoke was Enzo Falco.
Enzo’s face was bruised from Dominic’s earlier beating, two of his fingers taped crudely with medical splints, but his eyes burned with the manic, triumphant madness of a man who had finally burned his master's house to the ground. In his right hand, Enzo held a smoking AT4 rocket launcher tube, which he casually tossed aside into the debris.
"Dominic!" Enzo’s voice rang out through the ruined clinic, amplified by the echoing gunfire outside where Marco’s men were being systematically cut down in an ambush. "Did you really think I’d give up this location to Gianni in the cellar without a secondary extraction protocol? You always thought you were the chess master, big brother! But you forgot that a king is just a piece on the board that can’t move more than one square at a time!"
Matteo raised his rifle to fire at Enzo, but Enzo’s point man was faster. A three-round burst of armor-piercing rounds struck Matteo in the tactical vest. The kinetic impact slammed the federal agent against the steel examination table, knocking him to the floor, gasping for air as his ceramic plates cracked under the assault.
"Hold your fire!" Enzo barked at his mercenaries, raising a hand. "I need my sister-in-law breathing for another thirty minutes!"
Dominic reached for his Kimber, his fingers closing around the cold grip on the floor, but before he could raise the weapon, three laser sights converged directly on the center of his chest.
"Don't do it, Dom," Enzo said, stepping forward, his boots crunching over the shattered glass. "Look around you. Marco’s detail is dead outside. Gianni is locked in the mansion’s vault, waiting for the federal raid I called in forty minutes ago. The Boston field office thinks you fled here to execute a federal informant—Matteo—and your own wife to cover up the Elena Vance murder. When the Strike Force arrives, they’re going to find three bodies."
Enzo smiled—a grotesque, twisted grin that revealed the rotting core of a brother who had lived his entire life in Dominic’s shadow.
"They will find Matteo Russo, dead from mafia execution. They will find Sofia Falco, dead from acute cardiac failure caused by your negligence. And they will find you, Dominic... gunned down while resisting arrest by my private security contractors, who just happened to be assisting the federal operation as deputized assets."
"You did it," Dominic wheezed, his voice laced with blood as he knelt in the glass, keeping his body positioned between Enzo’s guns and Sofia’s trembling form on the gurney. "Elena Vance. It wasn't Gianni’s junkie. It was you."
Enzo chuckled, a dry, mocking sound that cut through the roaring flames.
"Of course it was me, Dom. Three years ago, Sofia was dying, and you were weak. You were ready to surrender our territories to the Morettis just to get access to their international hospital channels. You were going to bankrupt this family for a woman! So, I took initiative."
Enzo stepped closer, his eyes dancing with depravity.
"I found the girl. I ran the blood work through Sterling. And when the match came back five-by-five, I didn't hire a junkie to nudge her car. I drove the truck myself. I smashed her little Honda Civic into that concrete pillar at eighty miles an hour. I watched the paramedics cut her out of the wreckage. I made sure her brain was dead, but her heart was pumping sweet, rich oxygen until the harvest team arrived."
From the gurney behind Dominic, a choked, broken sound tore from Sofia’s throat. A sound of such profound, cosmic agony that it seemed to freeze the very flames around them.
"Enzo..." she wept, her fingers clawing at the silver emergency blanket, her chest heaving with violent, irregular spasms. "She was... she was just a child..."
"She was spare parts, Sofia!" Enzo spat, glaring at her with venomous contempt. "You should be thanking me on your knees! You’re breathing because I had the balls to pull the trigger that Dominic was too soft to touch! But instead, you let Matteo turn you into a rat! You took the ledger! You threatened to tear down our empire!"
Enzo leveled his custom gold-plated Beretta directly at Sofia’s forehead.
"So now, the spare parts go to waste. Goodbye, Sofia. Thank you for clearing the path to my throne."
Enzo’s finger tightened on the trigger.
In that microsecond, Dominic didn't think about his empire, his legacy, his god, or his survival. He did what he had done every day since the moment he met Sofia Russo.
He threw his body across hers.
BANG!
The bullet struck Dominic in the right shoulder blade, tearing through muscle and bone, the violent impact slamming him directly onto Sofia’s chest. A searing, white-hot fire erupted through his back, but Dominic didn't cry out. He clamped his teeth together until his molars cracked, his arms wrapping around Sofia’s frail frame, his broad back forming an impenetrable wall of flesh and iron between his wife and the firing squad.
"DOMINIC!" Sofia screamed, her voice cracking as his warm blood instantly soaked through the thin fabric of her hospital gown, burning against her freshly stitched chest.

"Shoot them both!" Enzo screamed, stepping back, waving his mercenaries forward. "KILL THEM BOTH NOW!"
