Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Bloodline

The realization did not shatter Dominic; it calcified him. Every betrayal in the history of the Falco dynasty had never come from the rival families on the outside; it had always crawled out of the bedroom, the dining table, the cradle.
Dominic let go of Gianni’s coat and walked to the wall safe. He reached deep into the recessed cavity of the vault, past the false bottom, and pressed a small, hidden release lever behind the digital wiring harness. A second, smaller compartment slid open with a sharp mechanical click.
Inside was a secondary digital drive—an encrypted black-box backup of the mansion’s closed-circuit surveillance network that not even his brother knew existed.
Dominic plugged the drive into his personal, air-gapped laptop on the walnut desk. His fingers flew across the keyboard, bypassing the firewalls until the time-stamped video archives from twelve hours ago materialized on the high-definition monitor.
"Watch," Dominic commanded.
Gianni leaned over the desk, his spectacles sliding down his nose, his breath catching in his throat.
The footage was timestamped at 11:15 PM—the exact hour Dominic was pinned down in a warehouse near the Chelsea docks, trading gunfire with unknown assailants. On the screen, the study door swung open. A figure stepped into the light.
It wasn't Enzo.
It was a woman.
She was dressed in a dark, oversized trench coat, moving with agonizing slowness, her left hand pressed firmly against the center of her chest beneath her coat—guarding the freshly sutured surgical incision in her sternum. Her face was pale, almost ghostly under the infrared light, her dark hair tangled around her neck.
Sofia.
Gianni gasped. "She... she came here? Before the hospital alerted us?"
"She didn't run from the hospital to escape," Dominic said, his heart shattering as he watched his wife on the screen. "She came here to find the truth herself. Look at who is with her."
Behind Sofia, a man entered the study. He was tall, lean, moving with the cold, measured efficiency of an elite military operator. He wore civilian tactical gear, a baseball cap pulled low over his eyes, but as he looked up directly into the corner camera, his face was revealed in stark, unforgiving resolution.
Matteo Russo. Sofia’s cousin. The man Dominic had believed to be rotting at the bottom of Massachusetts Bay for three years.
Matteo did not hack the safe. He guided Sofia’s trembling hand to the keypad. He whispered the code into her ear—a code that only Enzo had been given three months ago when Dominic had updated the family’s contingency protocols.
On the screen, Sofia opened the vault. She reached in, pulled out the black leather ledger, and sat down in Dominic’s leather chair. The footage showed her opening the book.
For three unbearable minutes, Dominic watched his wife read the details of Elena Vance’s murder.
He watched her hands begin to violently shake. He watched her bury her face in her hands, her shoulders heaving with silent, agonizing sobs, her freshly operated chest convulsing with unbearable pain. Then, she looked up.
She did not look at Matteo. She looked directly into the lens of the security camera—as if she knew that Dominic would eventually stand in this exact spot, staring back at her through the glass of a digital screen.
Her lips moved. Even without audio, the message was painfully clear.
*“You monster.”*
Then, she stood up, took the ledger, and allowed Matteo to wrap a heavy coat around her frail shoulders. Matteo reached into his vest, pulled out the silver anchor tie clip, dropped it onto the desk as a deliberate calling card, and led her out into the shadows.
"Dominic..." Gianni whispered, tears welling in the old man's eyes. "Enzo gave them the code. Enzo fed her the location of the safe. But why? If Enzo wanted to overthrow you, he would have brought the ledger to the Commission! He would have had the other five families vote you out of power and put a bullet in your head!"
"Because the Commission doesn't care if I murdered a college girl to save my wife," Dominic said, his voice flat, devoid of human warmth. "To the mafia, killing an outsider is a footnote. It’s not an impeachable offense. Enzo didn't want the Commission to execute me. He wanted something far worse."
Dominic pulled the Kimber .45 from his holster, checked the chamber with a crisp metallic snap, and slid it back into place.
"Enzo wanted to destroy my soul before he took my crown. He knew Sofia was the only thing on this earth that kept me human. He knew that if Sofia looked at me with hatred, if she walked into the arms of the federal government to bury me... I would burn this entire city to the ground trying to find her."
Dominic turned toward the study door, his eyes ablaze with ancient, unforgiving wrath.
"And while I am burning the city, Enzo steps forward as the sane, reasonable brother to take the throne."
Dominic took a long, heavy step toward the hallway.

"Bring Enzo to the cellar," Dominic commanded softly. "Tie him to the iron chair. Do not kill him yet. I want him to hear the sound of the world ending."
