Chapter 2 - The Scent of Treason

The rain outside the Falco estate in Beacon Hill was turning to sleet, freezing as it struck the ancient wrought-iron gates that guarded the perimeter. Two heavily armed sentries in tactical rain gear snapped to attention as Dominic’s lone SUV roared up the serpentine cobblestone driveway, its tires screaming against the slick stones.

Dominic didn’t wait for the vehicle to come to a complete stop before kicking the driver’s door open. He strode through the massive double doors of the neo-Gothic mansion, his wet overcoat dripping water onto the imported Italian marble foyer. The vast house was silent—a sprawling mausoleum of antique chandeliers, priceless oil paintings, and the lingering, spectral scent of Sofia’s jasmine perfume.

"Lock down the grounds," Dominic commanded, his voice cutting through the foyer like a crack of thunder.

From the arched corridor leading to the library, three men appeared. At the front was Enzo Falco, Dominic’s younger brother and the underboss of the family. Enzo was thirty-four, impeccably dressed in a charcoal three-piece suit, his sharp jawline and calculating hazel eyes carrying the distinct, arrogant beauty of the Falco bloodline. Behind him walked Gianni, the family’s aging consigliere, clutching a leather dossier, and two stone-faced capos with submachine guns slung beneath their jackets.

"Dominic," Enzo said, taking a step forward with palms open, his expression a masterclass in brotherly concern. "What happened? We received a distress alert from St. Jude’s. Marco’s men said there was an incident in the garage. Is Sofia—"

Before Enzo could finish the sentence, Dominic closed the ten-foot distance between them in half a heartbeat.

Dominic’s left hand struck like a viper, wrapping around Enzo’s throat and slamming his younger brother backward against the towering oak wainscoting of the wall with bone-jarring force. The antique sconces rattled. The two capos instantly reached for their weapons, but Gianni barked a frantic, terrified command:

"STAND DOWN! STAND DOWN, ALL OF YOU!"

Enzo didn’t choke; he gasped for air, his eyes widening in shock as his feet dangled an inch above the floor. Dominic leaned in close, his face inches from his brother's, his teeth bared in an animalistic snarl. The Kimber .45 in Dominic’s right hand pressed firmly beneath Enzo’s chin, the cold steel digging into the soft flesh of his throat.

"Where is she, Enzo?" Dominic growled, the words vibrating with unhinged fury. "Tell me where you sent her before I paint this hallway with your brains."

"Dom... Dom, are you out of your mind?!" Enzo choked out, his fingers clawing at Dominic’s iron grip. "I’ve been here... all night! Running the perimeter! The Morettis hit the fuel depots at the harbor... we thought you were dead!"

"Sofia is gone," Dominic hissed, his grip tightening until Enzo’s face flushed purple. "She left the hospital twenty minutes before I arrived. She knew about Vault 7. She knew about the heart donor records. The only people with the biometric keys to my private terminal are me, Gianni, and *you*."

"Dominic, please, listen to him!" Gianni pleaded, his aged hands trembling as he stepped between the brothers, careful not to touch Dominic’s gun arm. "Enzo has been in the war room with me since nine o'clock! We were tracking the harbor breach! If someone breached Vault 7, it wasn't done from within this house!"

Dominic held his brother pinned for three more agonizing seconds, searching Enzo’s eyes for the telltale flicker of deceit. There was fear there, yes, but beneath it was something worse: confusion, and an undercurrent of long-simmering resentment.

Dominic released him abruptly. Enzo collapsed to his knees, coughing violently, rubbing the dark red bruises already blooming on his neck.

"If it wasn't you," Dominic said, wheeling around to face Gianni, "then who the hell authorized the transfer of the security feeds at St. Jude’s to a blind server thirty minutes before she walked out?"

Gianni turned pale, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses with an unsteady hand. "The... the feeds were wiped?"

"Not wiped," Dominic said, stepping toward the grand staircase that led to his private study. "Rerouted. Marco was hit by an operative who knew his exact blind spot on the driver-side rear pillar. That’s an internal Falco tactical protocol. Only our high-tier personal protection details are trained on that sequence."

He took the stairs two at a time, leaving his men scrambling in his wake.

The master study was located on the third floor—a fortress within a fortress behind a four-inch solid steel core door disguised as hand-carved mahogany. Dominic keyed his thumbprint into the scanner hidden behind a bronze relief of Saint Michael slaying the dragon. The heavy latch clicked, and the door swung open with a pneumatic hiss.

The room was pitch black until the automated track lights flickered to life.

Dominic stopped dead in his tracks.

The room had not been ransacked; it had been surgically dissected.

Behind his massive walnut desk, the Renaissance oil painting of the Fall of Icarus had been swung aside. The reinforced titanium wall safe—Vault 7—stood wide open. The digital keypad had not been bypassed with brute force or explosives; the six-digit alpha-numeric sequence had been entered correctly on the first attempt, followed by a retinal override that had been spoofed using an ultra-high-resolution infrared scan.

Dominic walked slowly to the safe. His eyes dropped to the interior shelf.

The velvet-lined box containing his emergency bearer bonds and foreign passports was untouched. The three million dollars in untraceable diamonds remained in their velvet pouches.

Only one thing was missing: the black leather-bound ledger labeled *PROJECT ANCHOR*, alongside a flash drive containing the private autopsy report of a twenty-two-year-old girl named Elena Vance.

"My God," Gianni whispered from the doorway, having caught up, his voice trembling with horror as he saw the empty safe. "The Vance girl... Dominic, if Sofia reads those files..."

"She already has them," Dominic said, his voice dropping into a terrifying, dead calm that was far more dangerous than his earlier rage. He picked up an object lying on the edge of his desk—something the intruder had left behind intentionally.

It was a silver tie clip, shaped like an anchor, stained with a drop of dried blood.

Dominic turned the clip over in his hand. Stamped on the back were the initials: *M. R.*

Enzo, who had just reached the threshold of the study, leaning against the doorframe while catching his breath, saw the clip and froze. "Matteo Russo? Sofia’s cousin? Dominic, Matteo has been dead for three years! You attended his funeral! You were a pallbearer!"

"We never found Matteo’s body in the bay," Dominic said, his eyes narrowing until they were slits of pure obsidian. "We found a burned-out skiff and a severed hand that matched his dental records via an altered state coroner’s report. We assumed Moretti fed him to the sharks because he owed half a million in sports debt."

Dominic turned to his brother, the silver clip digging into his palm until his own skin broke.

"Matteo didn't die," Dominic said, the pieces of the nightmare falling into place with terrifying precision. "He was recruited. Not by the Morettis. By the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Sofia wasn't abducted by rival mobsters, Enzo. She was exfiltrated by her own blood... using the very evidence that will send me to a federal execution chamber."
