Chapter 8 - A Sister’s Vow

Night fell over the Hudson River, thick with fog and torrential rain.
On the private island estate belonging to Don Salvatore Moretti—a sprawling, fortified compound in Long Island Sound—an uneasy silence reigned. Salvatore Moretti, a ruthless patriarch in his sixties with slicked-back gray hair and cold, reptilian eyes, sat at his mahogany desk, pouring himself a glass of vintage scotch.
Across from him sat the five remaining syndicate bosses of New York.
"Julian Vance failed," Moretti said, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. "The Rossi compound was breached, but the boy is alive. And Marco just wiped out my elite cleanup team at Saint Jude's."
"Salvatore, you promised us this would be clean!" one of the bosses protested, sweating profusely. "Marco Rossi is a demon when cornered! If he finds out we backed you, he'll hang us from the Brooklyn Bridge!"
"Marco Rossi is a grieving widower blinded by rage," Moretti sneered, slamming his glass onto the desk. "He is hiding in his bunker like a wounded rat. Tomorrow morning, our federal contacts will seize his corporate accounts on fabricated money laundering charges. Once his wealth is frozen, his mercenaries will abandon him. Then, we take the docks, we take his assets, and we bury his boy in the same cemetery as Elena."
Suddenly, the lights across the entire estate blinked out.
The hum of the heavy diesel generators stopped abruptly. Absolute, pitch-black darkness swallowed the room.
"What was that?" one boss gasped, drawing a chrome pistol. "Backup power! Where is the backup power?!"
Outside the mansion, the night sky was torn open not by lightning, but by the roar of twin helicopter turbines descending through the fog.
Before the syndicate guards could fire a shot, four flashbang grenades crashed through the skylight, detonating in a blinding, deafening symphony of white light and thunderous sound.
*CRASH!*
Tactical ropes dropped through the shattered roof. Dozens of heavily armed operators in night-vision gear descended into the grand hall, firing suppressed rounds with surgical, terrifying efficiency. Every bodyguard in the room was neutralized in less than ten seconds.
The mahogany double doors of the study were blown off their hinges by explosive breaching charges.
Through the smoke stepped Marco Rossi.
He was dressed in black tactical gear, an assault rifle slung across his chest, his eyes burning with the cold fire of an executioner. But what made Salvatore Moretti’s heart seize in terror was the figure walking behind him.
Flanked by two elite operators, Tess Alder stepped into the room.
She wore a long black coat over her bandages, her face pale, but her head held high. In her hand, she carried the sealed medical journals of Elena Rossi and the confession files extracted from Julian Vance.
"Salvatore," Marco spoke, his voice cutting through the ringing ears of the terrified bosses. "You look surprised."
Moretti reached frantically for the revolver hidden beneath his desk, but Marco fired a single, pinpoint round through the wooden tabletop, destroying Moretti’s right hand in a shower of splintered wood and blood.
Moretti screamed, clutching his mangled wrist, falling to his knees before his desk. "Rossi! Wait! We can make a deal! The city belongs to all of us! You can have the docks! You can have the ports!"
"I don't want the docks, Salvatore," Marco said calmly, stepping forward until the barrel of his rifle rested against Moretti’s forehead. "I want justice for my wife."
Tess walked forward, her footsteps echoing in the silence. She looked down at the man who had ordered the slow poisoning of her sister and the execution of her nephew.
"Do you recognize me, Moretti?" Tess asked softly.
Moretti looked up through tears of agony, his eyes widening in sheer, disbelieving horror. "You... you have her eyes. Elena..."
"Her name was Elena Rossi," Tess whispered, her voice ringing with the finality of a gavel. "You poisoned her because you were afraid of her mind. You tried to kill her son because you were afraid of her legacy. But you forgot one thing, Salvatore."
Tess leaned down, staring into the terrified soul of the crime boss.
"A mother's love doesn't die in the grave. It passes to the ones she left behind."
Marco looked at Tess. He saw in her eyes not just Elena's courage, but a fierce, independent protector who had redeemed his entire family.
"Any last words, Moretti?" Marco asked.
Moretti could only tremble, his arrogance reduced to ash. "Forgive me..."
Marco didn't hesitate. "Elena already judged you."
