Chapter 4 - The Traitor Among Us

Dawn broke over Manhattan, casting a sickly gray light across the rain-slicked towers of the city. While Tess remained suspended between life and death in the sterile sanctuary of Saint Jude’s, Marco Rossi returned to his estate.

The glass parlor was cordoned off with yellow tape, but Marco bypassed it, his eyes cold as glaciers. In the mansion’s subterranean conference room—a concrete bunker lined with scramblers and encrypted feeds—six men sat in terrified silence.

Among them was Julian Vance, Marco’s long-time business partner and underboss, a smooth-talking aristocrat in a three-piece suit who managed the syndicate’s offshore logistics. Next to him was Viktor Ramos, the head of the mansion's private tactical security.

Marco entered without a word. He didn't sit. He slammed his bare hands onto the polished steel table, the sound reverberating like a thunderclap.

"Our outer perimeter is protected by six layers of biometric sensors, thermal cameras, and twenty ex-special forces guards," Marco began, his tone deceptively calm, a lethal whisper that promised slaughter. "Yet, three gunmen bypassed the southern gate, deactivated the infrared grid on the east lawn, and reached my son in less than four minutes. Explain it to me, Viktor."

Viktor Ramos turned pale, beads of sweat dripping from his hairline. "Mr. Rossi, the system was overridden from the master console inside the server room. Someone had the level-four encryption keys. It wasn't an external hack. It was an internal bypass."

"An inside job," Marco said softly.

He slowly walked around the perimeter of the table, his footsteps heavy and deliberate. "Three men came into my house to assassinate a six-year-old boy. Why? Because whoever ordered this knew that if Luca died, I would lose my mind. I would burn down the city, start an all-out war with the Moretti syndicate, and leave our entire infrastructure vulnerable to a corporate takeover."

Julian Vance cleared his throat, adjusting his gold cufflinks. "Marco, this is a tragedy beyond words. We are all thanking God that Luca survived. But we cannot jump to wild conclusions. The Morettis have been encroaching on our shipping docks in Brooklyn for months. This has their fingerprints all over it."

Marco stopped directly behind Julian’s chair. He placed a heavy, gloved hand on Julian’s shoulder, feeling the slight, instinctive flinch in the man's muscles.

"Does it, Julian?" Marco murmured. "Because funny thing... five minutes before the breach occurred, the security log recorded a data transfer from our internal logistics terminal. Someone sent the floor plans of the nursery and the sitting room to an encrypted IP address in the Bahamas."

Julian’s face stiffened. "Marco, if someone in our ranks betrayed us, we will hunt them down—"

*BANG!*

Marco drew his suppressed pistol in a blur of motion and fired a single round directly through Julian’s hand, pinning his palm to the oak table.

Julian shrieked in agony, blood spurting across his pristine suit as the other lieutenants jumped to their feet in sheer terror, hands raised in surrender.

"Sit down!" Marco roared, his voice shaking the concrete room.

The lieutenants instantly dropped back into their chairs, petrified.

Marco leaned down, his face inches from Julian’s twisted, screaming expression. "The IP address traced back to a shell company called 'Vance Maritime Holdings'. Did you think I was stupid, Julian? Did you think that because I was grieving my wife, I stopped monitoring the money?"

"Marco... please... they promised me... they said they would only kidnap him!" Julian sobbed through the excruciating pain. "They weren't supposed to shoot! The Morettis... they promised me half the port authority contracts if I gave them leverage over you!"

"You aimed loaded rifles at a six-year-old child," Marco snarled, pressing the hot barrel of the gun against Julian’s temple. "And you put three bullets into Elena’s sister."

Julian’s eyes widened through the tears of pain. "Elena’s... sister? What are you talking about? There was only a maid!"

"Her name is Tess Alder," Marco said, his voice dropping into an icy abyss. "And she has more honor in her bleeding finger than you have in your entire rotten existence. Viktor, take him to the basement. Keep him alive until I find out where Don Moretti is hiding. Then, feed him to the dogs."

As two guards dragged the screaming, bleeding traitor out of the bunker, Marco turned back to the remaining men. "Every asset the Morettis own in this state burns tonight. Prepare the crews."

Just then, Marco’s secure phone buzzed. It was Dr. Mercer from the hospital.

Marco answered immediately. "Is she alive?"

May you like

"Mr. Rossi," Mercer’s voice was breathless. "She just woke up. And she’s asking for Luca."
