Chapter 6 - The Viper Strikes Again

"STAY DOWN!" Marco reacted instantly.

In a fraction of a second, the remorseful widower vanished, replaced by the lethal predator who ruled New York's underworld. He grabbed Luca with one arm, shoving him beneath the steel hospital bed, while his other hand drew his concealed semi-automatic pistol from his shoulder holster.

"Tess, do not move," Marco commanded, his voice cold and steady.

"Marco, they're here for Luca," Tess gasped, panic seizing her chest despite the searing pain in her stitched wounds. "Take him and go!"

"Nobody is dying today," Marco snarled.

He moved silently toward the heavy wooden door of the private room. Through the small reinforced glass panel, he saw the flickering red emergency lights reflecting off two figures advancing down the hallway.

They weren't standard street thugs. They wore tactical balaclavas, black load-bearing vests, and wielded suppressed submachine guns. Outside the door, two of Marco’s elite guards lay dead in pools of blood, shot precisely through the back of the neck.

*They cut the power grid and bypassed the ground-floor security teams,* Marco analyzed with icy precision. *Moretti sent his cleanup crew.*

The door handle began to turn slowly.

Marco didn't wait. He kicked the door outward with violent force, catching the first operative square in the face. The man stumbled backward, his weapon clattering across the linoleum. Marco stepped through the threshold, firing two rounds directly into the first assassin's chest before pivoting to face the second.

The second gunman raised his barrel, but Marco lunged forward, grabbing the hot suppressor and forcing it toward the ceiling just as a burst of suppressed rounds ripped through the acoustic tiles. With a savage twist, Marco snapped the attacker's wrist, drove his knee into the man's sternum, and slammed his skull into the concrete wall with enough force to crack bone.

The hallway fell silent again, save for the hum of the backup generator.

Marco grabbed the dropped radio from the fallen operative’s vest. A harsh, gravelly voice was crackling over the frequency:

*"Team Alpha, status? Did you confirm the boy and the maid are eliminated? The Don wants the building set on fire in five minutes."*

Marco keyed the mic. "Tell Don Moretti that he should have brought an army."

A stunned silence hung on the radio line for two seconds before the voice hissed: *"Rossi..."*

"I know you're listening, Salvatore Moretti," Marco spoke into the radio, his voice dripping with venom. "You tried to slaughter my family. You broke the oldest code in this city. Enjoy your last sunrise, Salvatore. Because by nightfall, I will feed you your own heart."

Marco smashed the radio under his boot and rushed back into the room.

Luca was crying beneath the bed, trembling. Tess had forced herself up on her elbows, her stitches tearing under the strain, blood beginning to seep through her hospital gown once more.

"Marco... behind you!" Tess screamed suddenly.

A third assassin, who had scaled the window ledge from the exterior maintenance crane, burst through the shattered glass behind the curtain, knife gleaming in the crimson emergency light.

Before the killer could reach Luca, Tess did the impossible. Ignoring the tearing agony in her shattered torso, she rolled off the bed, grabbing the heavy metal IV drip pole, and swung it with all her remaining strength directly into the attacker's knees.

The assassin stumbled with a grunt of pain.

That split second was all Marco needed. He spun around, raised his weapon, and put a single round through the intruder’s forehead.

The body crashed to the floor.

Marco immediately fell to his knees beside Tess, catching her before she collapsed onto the shattered glass. She was pale, gasping for air, her hospital gown soaked through with fresh blood.

"Tess! Damn it, why did you do that?!" Marco shouted, lifting her carefully back onto the bed while holding pressure on her reopened surgical wounds.

Tess looked up at him through tears of excruciating pain, her voice barely a whisper: "I told you... I promised Elena... I will protect him with my life."

Marco looked at the blood on her gown, then down at Luca who was clinging to her hand, and finally out into the dark New York skyline.
