Chapter 2 - The Letter from the Grave

The luxury medical transport screamed down the rain-drenched highways toward Manhattan under heavy armed escort. Three black SUVs led the vanguard, sirens wailing, while four more guarded the rear, automatic rifles pointed out of rain-slicked windows. Inside the lead ambulance, monitors beeped in a frantic, irregular rhythm as medical personnel fought to keep Tess’s failing heart pumping.

In the SUV immediately trailing the ambulance, Marco sat in the shadowed leather interior. Beside him, Luca had finally cried himself to exhaustion, wrapped in a cashmere blanket, sleeping fitfully against the seat.

Marco’s hands were still stained with Tess’s blood. He held Elena’s letter under the dim amber reading lamp. With a breath that felt like jagged glass, he broke the seal and unfolded the three-page letter.

*My beloved Marco,* the letter began.

*If you are reading this, the worst has happened. Either my fears about your ruthless world have finally reached our precious Luca, or Tess has been forced to reveal herself to protect what is left of my heart.*

*I know you believe you know everything about me. You married me believing I was an orphan, raised in state care after a fire claimed my family. That was only half the truth. What I never had the courage to tell you was that I was not alone when my parents died. I had a younger sister.*

Marco’s heart hammered against his ribs. *A sister?*

*Her name was Teresa. When the system tore us apart, she was adopted by the Alders, a family that took her far away to the Midwest. For years, I searched for her in secret. When you and I built our empire, when your enemies grew more dangerous by the day, I finally found her. But by then, I was already dying of leukemia.*

*Tess was living a quiet, innocent life as a school teacher. When I reunited with her in secret during my final months in Zurich, I saw the purest light I had ever known. She possessed none of our ambition, none of the darkness that follows your syndicate, Marco. But more than that—she loved Luca before she ever met him. When the doctors told me I had weeks left, I fell to my knees and begged her for a promise.*

Marco’s eyes blurred with burning tears as the truth shattered his reality.

*I told her that your enemies were wolves, Marco. I told her that one day, when I was gone, your wealth and your guards would fail, because men who fight for money can always be bought. I asked her to abandon her life, to take classes, to learn how to hide in plain sight, and to enter our home as a servant so she could watch over Luca with the eyes of a mother, not a bodyguard.*

*I made her swear never to tell you. Because I knew your pride, Marco. I knew you would reject her, suspect her, or push her away into the crosshairs of your rivals. She gave up her career, her identity, and her peace to be a shadow in your home, scrubbing your floors, just so she could be there to whisper to our son every night that he was loved.*

*If she is hurt, Marco, do not let her die. She didn't do this for money. She did this because she is my blood, and Luca is her nephew. Protect her with the life you promised me.*

*Forever yours, Elena.*

The paper trembled in Marco’s grip.

His mind flashed back over the past eight months. He remembered the countless times he had walked through the marble corridors, barking orders into his encrypted phone, while Tess stepped quietly to the side, bowing her head in silence. He remembered finding Luca asleep in the library with a warm blanket carefully tucked around his shoulders, a cup of warm honey milk on the side table—small, tender acts he had assumed were done by the elderly housekeeper.

He remembered the bruises on her knees from scrubbing stone floors. He had treated the sister of his dead wife, the maternal aunt of his only son, like an invisible servant.

"Sir!" The driver’s voice broke the suffocating silence. "We’ve arrived at Saint Jude’s Trauma Pavilion. Dr. Mercer and the surgical board are waiting at the bay."

Marco wiped his eyes, his grief instantly calcifying into an icy, terrifying resolve. He folded the letter and pressed it into his inner breast pocket, directly over his heart.

"Call our entire private army," Marco commanded in a voice of lethal, absolute authority. "I want four sniper teams on the hospital roof. No one enters this hospital without biometric clearance. If Tess Alder dies tonight, whoever ordered that hit on my house won't just die—I will burn their entire bloodline from the face of this earth."
