Chapter 7 - The Syndicate's Ultimatum

Within two hours, Marco had moved Tess and Luca to the safest place on the eastern seaboard: an underground fortified bunker beneath his corporate headquarters in lower Manhattan, originally constructed to withstand a nuclear blast.
The bunker was fully equipped with an advanced surgical bay, where Dr. Mercer and a trusted team had re-stitched Tess's wounds and stabilized her vital signs under the heaviest armed security in the city.
In the operations room adjacent to the medical suite, the walls were covered with high-resolution monitors displaying satellite feeds, bank accounts, and tactical wiretaps.
Arthur walked into the room, holding a encrypted tablet. "Mr. Rossi. We cracked Julian Vance's private phone before he lost consciousness in the cellar."
Marco turned from the monitor, his eyes shadowed with dark circles, his shirt rolled up to his elbows, revealing the old military tattoos on his forearms. "What did you find?"
"It’s worse than we thought, sir," Arthur said, handing over the tablet. "Julian wasn't just working with Don Moretti. This goes back three years."
Marco’s eyes narrowed. "Three years? What does that mean?"
"The medical records, sir," Arthur’s voice shook. "Mrs. Elena’s leukemia."
Marco stopped breathing. The air in the bunker suddenly felt sub-zero. "Elena died of cancer. The specialists in Switzerland confirmed it."
"No, sir," Arthur swallowed hard, his face pale with horror. "Julian Vance was transferring money to an offshore account registered to Dr. Klaus Weber, the chief oncologist who treated Mrs. Elena in Zurich. Julian and Moretti didn't just plan this attack on Luca—they murdered your wife."
Marco grabbed Arthur’s collar, his voice a terrifying whisper. "Say that again."
"They were poisoning her, Marco," a weak voice came from the doorway.
Marco let go of Arthur and spun around.
Tess was standing there, supported by a rolling IV stand and leaning heavily against the reinforced doorframe. She was wrapped in a thick wool blanket, her face pale as marble, but her eyes burning with an intense, haunting clarity.
"Tess, you should be lying down," Marco said, stepping toward her instinctively to support her weight.
"Listen to me, Marco," Tess breathed, gripping his arm with surprising strength. "When Elena secretly met me in Zurich... before she passed... she gave me her medical journals. She told me she suspected something was wrong. Her symptoms didn't match the progression of normal leukemia. She felt her body shutting down after every 'treatment'."
Marco’s mind fractured into a thousand shards of agony. *Elena knew. She was being murdered, and she hid it from me to protect me.*
"Why didn't she tell me?" Marco roared, the agony finally tearing out of him, a wounded animal screaming into the void. "WHY DIDN'T SHE LET ME TEAR THEM APART THREE YEARS AGO?!"
"Because she knew you would start a war that would kill Luca!" Tess cried, tears spilling over her cheeks. "The Morettis held half the city council, the ports, and federal judges. If you had gone to war back then, they would have slaughtered you and our boy. Elena traded her life for time! She gave her life so that I could sneak into your house, watch over Luca, and wait until Luca was old enough to be safe!"
Tess took a step closer, resting her trembling hand on Marco’s chest, feeling the violent, chaotic hammering of his broken heart.
"Elena didn't die of an illness, Marco," Tess whispered, her voice laced with absolute conviction. "She died a martyr. And now, those same monsters are coming to finish what they started. They want your son. They want your empire. Are you going to let them take Elena’s sacrifice and throw it into the dirt?"
Marco stood frozen, the truth settling deep into his soul.
All the grief, all the guilt, all the cold indifference he had carried for three years suddenly transformed into a single, blinding, incandescent purpose.
He turned toward the digital tactical board.
"Arthur," Marco commanded, his voice cold, hollow, and utterly devoid of mercy.
"Yes, Mr. Rossi?"

"Call the captains. Mobilize every man who ever swore an oath to the Rossi name. Tell them that tonight, the Moretti family ceases to exist."
