Chapter 9 - The Reckoning at Blackwood Manor

"GET UP, MARCUS," Alexander’s voice cut through the ringing in the room like the crack of a whip.
Marcus Vance scrambled across the floor, clutching his chest, his polished face smeared with glass dust and blood from minor cuts. He reached frantically for the gold-plated revolver he kept hidden beneath the lip of the desk, but before his fingers could touch the wood, a heavy combat boot slammed down on his wrist, pinning it to the floor with bone-crushing force.
Marcus screamed in agony.
Alexander stood over him, his Glock pointed directly between Marcus’s eyes.
"Where is the bravado now, Marcus?" Alexander asked softly, the rain whipping his hair across his face through the shattered window. "Where is the sophisticated patriarch who buys stolen heirlooms from Swiss vaults?"
Two operators dragged Victoria out from beneath the armchair. She was sobbing hysterically, her designer dress shredded by broken glass.
"Alexander, please! Please!" Victoria wailed, looking at him with desperate, pleading eyes. "I didn't know everything! My father forced me! He told me we had to do this to save our family! Don't let them kill me!"
"You slapped my sister," Alexander said, his voice flat, emotionless, and colder than the rain falling through the ceiling. "You dragged her by her hair across this room because she accidentally exposed the truth you were hiding. You are just as rotten as he is."
Marcus groaned, glaring up at Alexander with eyes full of venom. "You think you've won, boy? You think a DNA test means anything in this town? I own the judges! I own the district attorney! The moment you pull that trigger, you spend the rest of your life in an ADX supermax facility!"
"He's not going to pull the trigger, Marcus," a new voice spoke.
Elena stepped forward.
She stood beside Alexander, looking down at the man who had ordered the murder of her mother, who had sentenced her to twenty-four years of poverty, hunger, and fear. In her hand, she held a sleek, military-grade tablet displaying a live broadcast.
"You're not going to be arrested by Alexander, Mr. Vance," Elena said, her voice steady and clear, ringing out with the unyielding authority of a true Sterling. "Look at the screen."
Marcus shifted his bloodied gaze to the tablet.
On the screen was the live broadcast of *CNBC*, *CNN*, and *The Wall Street Journal*. The headline running along the bottom ticker was catastrophic:
**BREAKING: FEDERAL AGENTS SEIZE VANCE FINANCIAL ASSETS ACROSS SIX COUNTRIES. EMERALD LOCKET AUDIO EXPOSES 1999 ASSASSINATION OF ELEANOR STERLING. SEC FILES CHARGES OF TREASON, EMBEZZLEMENT, AND FIRST-DEGREE MURDER AGAINST MARCUS VANCE.**
"While we were on the helicopter," Elena continued, stepping closer until her boots were inches from Marcus’s face, "Alexander transmitted our mother’s cassette recording, the DNA sequencing results, and thirty years of your offshore Cayman transaction records to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Justice, and every major news network in the Western Hemisphere."
Marcus's jaw dropped. The breath rushed out of his lungs as if he had been struck by a locomotive. His entire empire—the web of deceit, political favors, and corporate theft he had spent half a century weaving—had unraveled in less than forty-five minutes.
"You... you can't..." Marcus stammered, his eyes turning wild with insanity. "Eleanor was supposed to die... she was supposed to disappear..."
"Our mother died," Alexander said, leaning down until his weapon was pressed against Marcus’s forehead. "But her blood survived. And her name will outlive yours by a thousand years."
The sound of elevator bells chimed down the corridor. The private elevator doors opened, and twenty federal agents clad in blue jackets with *FBI* emblazoned in gold across their backs poured into the penthouse, weapons raised.
"Federal agents! Nobody move!" the lead agent shouted.
Alexander stepped back slowly, keeping his hands visible as he lowered his firearm and handed it to the federal team leader.
"The suspects are all yours, Agent Miller," Alexander said calmly. "You'll find Marcus Vance’s full confession recorded on the cloud servers of this penthouse for the last twenty minutes."
Marcus Vance was dragged to his feet in handcuffs, his silver hair wild, screaming incoherent curses into the stormy air as federal agents pushed him toward the elevators. Victoria followed, clutching her face, weeping in utter disgrace as camera flashes from media helicopters outside illuminated her downfall.

The storm was beginning to pass. To the east, over the Atlantic, the first pale, golden light of dawn was breaking through the bruised clouds, casting a warm, amber glow across the broken glass of the penthouse floor.
