Chapter 7 - A Trap in the Penthouse

The laboratory was plunged into chaos. The fire suppression system activated, spraying a dense, cold mist across the room that mixed with the white chemical dust of the shattered medical equipment.
"Out the back! Dr. Chen, move!" Alexander yelled, dragging Elena beneath the cover of the heavy steel examination tables.
Two of Alexander’s SAS security operators burst into the lab from the hallway, their weapons raised.
"We have two sniper teams on the roofs across the street, sir!" the lead operative shouted over the howling alarm. "They’re using thermal optics! They know we're inside!"
"We aren't staying here," Alexander said, pulling the hard-drive unit containing the DNA sequencing data from the computer tower and shoving it into his tactical vest. "Where is the transport?"
"The alley is compromised, Mr. Sterling! But we intercepted an unencrypted radio transmission from Marcus Vance's command team." The operative paused, looking grim. "Marcus has taken over the Sterling Tower penthouse. He’s holding thirty staff members hostage—including your domestic staff. He announced on national television twenty minutes ago that *you* suffered a psychotic break, murdered your fiancée, and fled with a hostage."
Elena looked at Alexander in horror. "He's framing you."
"He's not just framing me," Alexander said, his hazel eyes burning with a terrifying, incandescent rage. "He's forcing me to come to him. He knows I won't let innocent people die for my family's secrets."
"Alexander, it's a trap!" Elena cried out, grabbing his jacket. "He wants you in that penthouse! He has the whole building locked down! If you walk in there, he'll kill you and make it look like suicide by cop!"
Alexander turned to his sister. He reached out and gently cupped her face—the face that held the exact same features as the mother he had wept for every night of his childhood.
"He wants me," Alexander agreed coldly. "But he doesn't know that my mother left one more thing behind."
"What?" Elena asked.
Alexander reached into his pocket and pulled out the shattered golden compartment from the emerald necklace. He turned it over, pointing to the microscopic engraving of Elena's name.
"When I was six years old, my father showed me the architectural schematics of Sterling Tower before he lost his mind," Alexander whispered. "Sterling Tower wasn't just built as a headquarters. It was built during the Cold War era by my grandfather as a modern citadel. Beneath the master penthouse is a secondary reinforced command hub—a panic vault designed to withstand a bunker-buster bomb. The master override codes aren't electronic. They're mechanical."
He held up the golden hinge of the locket.
"The key isn't a digital password," Alexander said, his lips curling into a ruthless smile. "The key is the setting of this necklace. The gold base is a master barrel key for the mechanical overrides of the entire tower’s life support and electrical grids. My mother didn't just hide a photograph in this gem. She hid the keys to the kingdom."
Elena looked at the tiny piece of gold, understanding dawning in her eyes. "Victoria tried to smash it because she knew."
"Victoria knew her father needed it," Alexander said. "Marcus thought the key was lost with my mother. When Victoria saw Elena wearing a scrap of that old jewelry, she tried to take it. When it broke, Marcus realized the game was up."
Alexander racked the slide of his firearm. He looked at his security team.
"Call in every asset we have in the Tri-State area," Alexander ordered. "Helicopters. Tactical teams. Media feeds. We aren't sneaking back into Sterling Tower. We are invading it."
He looked at Elena. "Are you ready, little sister?"
Elena wiped the soot and blood from her cheek. She stood tall, her shoulders squared, her hazel eyes gleaming with cold, unwavering resolve.

"Let's go take our name back," she said.
