Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Eleanor Sterling

The conference room door slammed shut, cutting off the echoing shouts of Marcus Vance. The penthouse grew quiet again, save for the torrential rain now lashing against the floor-to-ceiling windows, blurring the lights of Manhattan into streaks of red, gold, and silver.
Alexander wasted no time. He turned to Elena. "Where is the tin box your foster mother gave you?"
"In my locker in the basement staff room," she answered, rising quickly from the sofa. Her knees were still shaking, but the sheer adrenaline coursing through her veins kept her upright.
"Let’s go," Alexander said.
Together with Mrs. Gable, they took the service elevator straight down to the sub-basement levels beneath Sterling Tower. The basement smelled of damp concrete, laundry detergent, and industrial steam. Rows of metal lockers lined the corridor where thirty different domestic workers, maintenance staff, and drivers kept their belongings.
Elena led Alexander to locker number 42. She dialed the combination with trembling fingers and swung the thin metal door open. From beneath a pile of spare uniforms, she pulled out an old, rusted biscuit tin adorned with faded images of English roses.
Alexander took the tin from her hands. His heart hammered in his throat as he lifted the rusted lid.
Inside lay three items:
A folded piece of paper with the Park Avenue address.
A small, tarnished silver rattle engraved with the initials *E.S.*
And an unsealed envelope containing a cassette tape—a standard 60-minute Maxell cassette from the 1990s, the plastic yellowed with age.
"Do we still have a cassette player in the building?" Alexander asked, his voice shaking.
"In the audio room on the fourth floor," Mrs. Gable answered immediately, her eyes wide with apprehension. "Old Mr. Sterling never threw away his vintage recording equipment."
Ten minutes later, the three of them stood inside a dimly lit sound studio on the building's media floor. Alexander set the cassette into the deck of a massive vintage Marantz receiver. He hit *PLAY*.
A sharp hiss of magnetic tape static filled the monitors. Then, after several agonizing seconds of white noise, a woman took a deep, shuddering breath.
*"If anyone is listening to this... if Sarah was able to keep her safe... then it means I am already dead."*
Alexander stopped breathing.
It was his mother’s voice. He would recognize that aristocratic, melodic cadence anywhere in the world. It was the same voice that had read him bedtime stories about dragons and knights before his life had been turned into an endless nightmare of security details, bodyguards, and cold isolation.
*"Alexander, my sweet, brave boy,"* Eleanor’s voice choked through the speaker, accompanied by the distant sound of rainfall in the background of the original recording. *"You are only four years old as I record this, playing with your wooden blocks in the next room. You don't understand why Mommy is crying. You don't understand that the men who smile at your father at the charity galas are monsters."*
The recording clicked, followed by the sound of Eleanor coughing—a dry, painful sound.
*"Marcus Vance found out about the second trust,"* she continued, her voice dropping to a desperate whisper. *"When your father fell ill last winter, Marcus realized the Sterling charter required that if our estate was divided between two direct blood heirs, the Vance family’s proxy shares would be completely nullified. When I became pregnant with Elena... he threatened to destroy us. He told my husband that our daughter was not his, that she was a product of treason. But my husband knew the truth. We knew the Vance family was embezzling billions through offshore shells in the Caymans."*
Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. She backed away from the console, staring at the black speakers as if they were possessed by spirits.
*"I am writing this on October 14th,"* Eleanor’s voice grew increasingly frantic. *"My brakes were tampered with yesterday morning. The mechanic told me it was a fluid leak, but I know better. Marcus was watching our house. If they kill me, they will come for Elena next. They cannot touch Alexander because he is already publicly recognized as the male heir. But Elena is unknown to the world. She is only three months old. I have paid Sarah, our trusted maid, everything I have left to take Elena across state lines tonight. To hide her in Ohio. To give her my mother's maiden name."*
A heavy sob tore through the recording.
*"Elena, if you ever hear this... your real name is Elena Eleanor Sterling. You are Alexander's baby sister. You have his eyes. You have my heart. Alexander, protect your sister. Do not trust Marcus. Do not trust anyone who carries the Vance blood. They will kill to keep the Sterling empire."*
The tape ended with a sudden, violent screech of metal, followed by silence. The Marantz deck clicked as the mechanical head disengaged.
The audio room was dead quiet.
Elena looked up at Alexander. Her eyes were wide, luminous, and filled with tears of pure shock.
Alexander was staring at her, his entire body trembling with a mixture of immense grief, fury, and sudden, overwhelming realization. He remembered the vague memory of his mother’s swollen belly when he was three years old. He remembered being told by his father, weeks after the funeral, that the baby had died during childbirth and that they must never, ever speak of it again.
His father hadn't been protecting him from sorrow. His father had been paralyzed by terror—terror orchestrated by Marcus Vance.
"My sister," Alexander breathed, his voice breaking into a sob.
Before either of them could take another breath, the emergency fire alarm began to wail throughout the building. The piercing sirens were followed immediately by the automated voice of the building's central system:
*"WARNING. SECURITY BREACH IN SUB-LEVEL THREE. EMERGENCY PROTOCOL ACTIVATED. ELEVATOR SHAFTS POWERING DOWN."*
David’s voice crackled frantically through the two-way radio strapped to Alexander’s belt.

*"Mr. Sterling! Get out of the media room! Marcus Vance wasn't alone! His private security team just breached the underground garage!"*
