Chapter 4 - Blood and Deceit

The crimson emergency lights bathed the hallway in a sinister glow. The piercing siren wailed at two-second intervals, reverberating through the reinforced concrete walls like the heartbeat of an angry beast.

Alexander grabbed Elena’s wrist. "Stay behind me. Don't let go of my hand, no matter what happens."

"Alexander—" Elena's voice was panicked. Her world had completely inverted in the span of an hour. She had walked into the penthouse that morning as an underpaid maid afraid of being fired over broken crystal; now, she was being hunted through a skyscraper as the missing heiress to one of the largest private fortunes on the planet.

"We have to move," Alexander said with steely calm. He reached under the audio room’s mixing console, pulled open a hidden latch, and retrieved a matte-black Glock 19 semi-automatic pistol. He racked the slide back with a practiced, fluid motion. Growing up as the sole heir to the Sterling dynasty, his father had forced him through seven years of executive protection training and tactical firearms instruction. He had hated it as a boy. Right now, he thanked God for it.

He led Elena down the narrow rear stairwell that led toward the private security annex on the fifth floor. Mrs. Gable followed closely behind, moving with surprising agility for a woman in her late sixties.

"David, report," Alexander spoke into his lapel microphone.

*"They cut the hardwired power lines to the private elevators, sir,"* David’s voice came back, riddled with static and the distant sound of heavy thuds. *"Marcus had a tactical team waiting in two black Suburbans in the subterranean loading bay. They took out the perimeter guards with suppressed carbines. They aren't trying to negotiate, Mr. Sterling. They're here to sanitize the site."*

"Where is Victoria?" Alexander asked, his eyes darting down each flight of stairs as they descended.

*"She slipped out during the power flick. She's with her father. They're heading up the service stairs to intercept you. They know about the girl, Alexander! Marcus must have known the moment he saw her face!"*

Suddenly, the stairwell door two flights below them was kicked open with an explosive bang.

Heavy tactical boots pounded against the concrete steps. Two men clad in dark gray body armor, carrying short-barreled submachine guns with mounted flashlights, swept their beams up the stairwell.

"Target identified! Fifth floor landing!" a voice shouted.

Alexander shoved Elena and Mrs. Gable through the heavy fire door of the fifth-floor landing just as a burst of suppressed automatic fire chewed through the door frame, sending sharp shards of metal and pulverized concrete flying through the air.

"Down! Stay down!" Alexander yelled, firing three rapid shots down the stairwell to suppress the advance. The thunderous cracks of his Glock echoed violently in the confined space. A grunt of pain followed; one of the mercenaries tumbled backward down the iron steps.

Alexander slammed the heavy steel fire door shut and engaged the deadbolts. He knew the reinforced metal would only hold them for two or three minutes at best.

They were now inside the building’s corporate archive floor—a vast, labyrinthine space filled with rows of motorized filing cabinets, server racks, and antique furniture covered in white canvas dust sheets. The air was cool and smelled of ozone from the backup diesel generators humming beneath the floor.

"Over here!" Elena whispered urgently, pointing toward the eastern wall.

"Elena, wait!" Alexander called out.

"No, listen to me!" Elena said, her eyes flashing with a sudden, instinctual clarity. "When I was cleaning this floor two weeks ago, I found an old blueprints cabinet behind the server racks. There’s an emergency freight chute designed for fire evacuation. It leads straight down to the old pneumatic sorting room in the sub-basement, bypasses all the main hallways, and exits into the subway access tunnel!"

Alexander stared at her. He had owned this building for six years and had never reviewed the original 1930s structural schematics of the sub-levels.

"You memorized the layout?"

"I memorize everything," Elena said, her chin lifting with a stubborn resilience that belonged entirely to Eleanor Sterling. "When you grow up with nothing, you learn where every exit is. Follow me."

Before Alexander could move, the fire door behind them groaned under the impact of a hydraulic breaching ram. The steel frame warped with a sickening screech.

They ran. Elena darted through the maze of filing cabinets with effortless precision, turning left at a row of server towers and ducking beneath a heavy overhead cooling pipe. Behind them, the fire door blew inward with a deafening crash.

Flashlight beams sliced through the dark archive like laser blades.

"Find them!" Marcus Vance’s voice echoed across the expansive floor, chilling and entirely devoid of human empathy. "Kill the girl! Bring Alexander to me alive! If the girl dies, the inheritance reverts entirely to the Vance trust! Shoot on sight!"
