Chapter 3 - The Golden Trap

Margaret’s face drained of color so fast she looked like she had seen a ghost rising from the Atlantic.
She blinked once, twice, vigorously shaking her head as if trying to clear a hallucination. In her universe, women like me didn't wear four gold stripes. Women like me carried her shopping bags, managed her son’s laundry schedule, and nodded politely while she tore down our self-worth at family dinners.
"Owen!" Margaret hissed, grabbing her son’s arm so violently that his gin and tonic sloshed over the rim of his glass. "Owen, look at the stairs! Tell me I'm hallucinating. Tell me that woman didn't just dress up in a stolen Halloween costume!"
Owen turned around, following his mother’s trembling finger. When his eyes landed on me—standing tall in full Navy dress whites, ribbons glittering under the chandeliers, flanked by a lieutenant commander—his breath caught in his throat. He dropped his glass. It shattered against the marble floor with a sharp crash that momentarily silenced the nearest cluster of guests.
"Claire?" Owen whispered, his voice cracking into a panicked squeak. "What... what are you wearing? Where did you get that?"
I didn't break my stride. I walked across the polished marble floor toward them, my heels ringing out like military drumbeats. A group of three high-ranking admirals standing near the entrance turned as I approached, their faces lighting up with immediate, profound respect.
"Captain Ellison!" Rear Admiral Henderson boomed, stepping forward to extend his hand. "Good evening, Captain. Incredible turnout tonight. Your logistical layout for this fleet assembly is an absolute masterclass. The Pentagon has been calling my office all afternoon just to compliment your operational brief."
"Thank you, Admiral," I said, shaking his hand firmly. "We wanted to ensure the fleet’s hard work was honored properly this year."
Margaret’s knees nearly buckled. She grabbed onto Owen’s tuxedo jacket for dear life, her eyes bulging out of her head.
Captain? her brain screamed. Did he just call her Captain?
"Excuse me," Margaret blurted out, her voice rising to a shrill, hysterical pitch that cut right through the sophisticated hum of the ballroom. She pushed past Admiral Henderson with total disregard for naval protocol, pointing a shaking, diamond-ringed finger straight into my face.
"This has gone entirely too far!" Margaret shrieked, her face mottled purple with rage and utter humiliation. "I don't know what kind of pathetic delusion has possessed you tonight, Claire, but parading around in a stolen military uniform to impress strangers is beyond sick! You are an administrative secretary! You type memos! You push papers!"
The entire ballroom went dead silent.
Music drifted faintly from the speakers in the corner, but every conversation, every clink of crystal, and every laugh died instantly. Dozens of admirals, generals, captains, and distinguished civilian guests turned their heads in unison, staring in absolute shock at the screaming woman pointing a finger at a senior naval officer.
Owen turned the color of skim milk. He grabbed his mother’s arm, pulling back with desperate force. "Mom, shut up! Stop it right now! For God's sake, just stop!"
"I will not stop!" Margaret shrieked, shaking Owen off her arm, her eyes wild with vindictive triumph. She truly believed she had caught me red-handed in some elaborate, psychotic lie. "Look at her! She’s playing dress-up! She’s an imposter! She’s committing a federal felony right here in front of the entire command staff!"

She turned around, gazing frantically at the cluster of high-ranking officers standing around us, demanding their validation.
"Admirals! General!" Margaret cried out, throwing her hands in the air. "Arrest her! Arrest this fraud immediately before she disgraces this entire uniform!"
