Chapter 24 - The Vanishing Act

"Sever the drone link! Disconnect satellite uplink immediately!" I shouted, slamming my palm down on the tactical override console.
Before the technician could flip the switch, a blinding flash engulfed the thermal drone feed. The *MV Vance Horizon* didn't sink; an explosive charge mounted within the container detonated, blowing a localized twenty-foot hole through the freighter's midsection and vaporizing the internal telemetry relays.
"Damage assessment!" General Meyers barked.
"SEAL team took no casualties—they cleared the container perimeter before the blast!" the tactical coordinator yelled. "Freighter is taking on water, but the compartment bulkheads have sealed. The ship will stay afloat. But Admiral... the data wasn't on that ship."
I gripped the edge of the mahogany briefing table, my mind racing through every layer of the Vance family’s logistical network. The freighter had been a diversion from the beginning. A massive, floating target designed to pull the full surveillance apparatus of the United States Navy toward the Luzon Strait while the true shipment took another route.
"General, Marcus Vance didn't put the server on that ship," I said, turning to the Chairman, my pulse electric with clarity. "A commercial container vessel takes twelve days to cross the Pacific. Marcus knew I was nominated for Deputy Director. He knew the moment my stars were confirmed, I would audit the Black Trident supply lines. He never intended to ship the cryptographic core by sea."
"Then where is it, Avery?" the Chairman demanded. "Marcus Vance cleared customs out of Dulles six hours ago on a private corporate jet bound for Zurich!"
"He didn't clear customs with thirty terabytes of classified optical hardware," I replied, pulling up the family’s domestic estate filings on my screen. "You cannot transport quantum-encrypted cryptographic matrices through commercial airspace without tripping electromagnetic radiation alarms. Marcus had to transport it via a high-voltage, ground-based transmission pipe."
I typed rapidly into the terminal, isolating the power consumption records for every commercial property registered to Vance Global Logistics over the last seventy-two hours.
On the eastern seaboard map, a massive spike of industrial power blinked to life—not in an overseas territory, but ninety miles south of Washington, D.C., in the rural hills of Fauquier County, Virginia.
"Vance Global's automated data repository," Agent Vance said, leaning over my shoulder. "It’s listed as a redundant backup facility for commercial shipping manifests. It’s located inside a converted Cold War underground bunker."
"They aren't shipping the physical server out of the country," I said, realization hardening into rage. "They installed a clandestine fiber-optic uplink directly into the transatlantic commercial cable network. They are transmitting Black Trident's source code byte by byte to an offshore server farm right under our noses."

"Admiral Ellison," General Meyers said, his voice dropping to a deadly pitch. "You have tactical operational command. What do you need?"
"Scramble two MH-60 Black Hawk helicopters from Fort Belvoir carrying the Hostage Rescue Team and FBI Tactical Operations," I commanded, pulling my sidearm holster tight against my uniform. "And place Beatrice Vance under emergency federal detention. The matriarch is about to watch her empire burn."
