Chapter 23 - Storm Over the Mariana Trench

Ten thousand miles away, the Pacific Ocean was a violent cauldron of churning black water. Waves rose twenty feet into the air, smashing against the rusted hull of the *MV Vance Horizon*. The freighter was cruising at eighteen knots, running completely dark without navigation lights, attempting to slip past the outer screening perimeter of the Seventh Fleet.
From the black depths of the sea, four tactical submersibles surfaced against the freighter’s leeward side. Eight Navy SEALs, clad in matte-black maritime assault gear and equipped with suppressed carbines and night-vision optics, attached pneumatic boarding ladders to the freeboard with surgical silence.
Back in the Pentagon NMCC, I watched the live feeds transmitted via high-altitude RQ-4 Global Hawk drone. The thermal imaging turned the world into shades of ethereal green and white.
"Assault team is on deck," the voice of Master Chief Marcus Bennett crackled through the secure speaker. "Bridge team moving in. Engineering team descending to lower cargo holds."
"Be advised, Master Chief," I spoke into the command microphone. "The vessel's security detachment is comprised of former foreign military contractors. Rules of engagement are weapons-free. Secure that cryptographic core intact."
"Copy that, Admiral. Breaching bridge in three... two... one."
The thermal monitor flashed as flashbang grenades illuminated the freighter's bridge. Shouts, muffled gunfire, and the sharp percussion of suppressed carbines rattled through the communications channel. Within ninety seconds, the bridge was reported secure.
"Bridge is neutralized," the team lead reported. "Three enemy combatants detained. Ship's master is in custody. Cargo team, what is your status?"
Static filled the speaker, followed by the breathing of the secondary assault squad working its way into the belly of the vessel. The cargo hold was a maze of stacked steel containers, groaning under the rhythmic violence of the ocean storm.
"Admiral, we are at Container 404-Delta," the squad leader reported. "The external lock has been overridden with a commercial keypad. We are cutting through the hinges now."
Every officer in the NMCC leaned forward. The Joint Chiefs held their breath. If Black Trident’s server banks were secured, the entire Pacific deterrence network would remain inviolate.
The sound of metal grinding against metal echoed over the speaker. Then, the hiss of heavy pressurized doors opening.
A pause dragged out for five agonizing seconds.
"Admiral..." the squad leader’s voice sounded hollow, stripped of its tactical composure. "Container is breached."
"Report, Lieutenant," I commanded. "Do you have the cryptographic server?"
"Negative, Admiral! The container is empty!"
A gasp went through the command room.
"Repeat your last, Lieutenant," General Meyers snapped into his headset. "Did you say empty?"
"Sir, the container has been stripped. There is no server. There are no schematics. But Admiral... you need to see this."
The squad leader engaged his helmet camera. The live feed resolved on our center screen. Inside the hollow steel container, bolted to the floor, was a single illuminated digital timer wired to a civilian cellular modem. Painted across the steel wall in crude white spray paint was a message meant for me alone:
May you like
*YOU WERE TOO SLOW, AVERY.*
And beside the writing, the digital timer struck zero.
