Chapter 25 - The Matriarch’s Last Stand

The penthouse atop the Vance Tower in downtown Washington was an altar of polished marble, modern art, and suffocating entitlement. Outside, the rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling glass, framing the distant, illuminated dome of the Capitol.

Beatrice Vance sat on a cream-colored velvet sofa, sipping vintage champagne from a crystal flute. She wore an emerald-green designer evening gown, her hair immaculate, every diamond on her fingers catching the soft chandelier light.

Across the room, her private legal counsel and two senior lobbyists were frantically shredding documents and shouting into secure phones.

"Tell the Senator that if he doesn't block the federal subpoena by morning, I will release the donor logs from his 2022 campaign!" Beatrice snapped, not even looking at her attorney. "I bought his seat on the Armed Services Committee, and I can unseat him with a single phone call!"

"Mrs. Vance," her chief legal advisor pleaded, sweating through his collar. "The FBI has already frozen the primary offshore accounts in the Caymans. Owen was taken into custody two hours ago at the marina. We have lost contact with Marcus's jet over the Atlantic!"

Beatrice set her glass down with a sharp *clink* on the glass table. Her aristocratic face contorted with disgust. "Owen is a weak, spineless creature who should have been cast out of this family the day he married that wretched little military clerk. And Marcus is a fool if he gets caught before the wire transfer confirms. We have sovereign immunity agreements pending with three foreign consulates! The Department of Justice wouldn't dare touch me!"

*CRASH!*

The reinforced oak doors of the penthouse exploded inward with a deafening boom.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! NOBODY MOVE!"

Tactical officers in full body armor flooded the foyer, laser sights piercing the dim room. Before Beatrice could rise from her sofa, the private security guards were thrown face-down onto the marble, their weapons stripped in seconds.

The attorneys dropped their briefcases and raised their hands in terror.

Beatrice stood tall, her eyes blazing with aristocratic fury. "How dare you! Do you know who I am? I will have every single badge in this room revoked by dawn! Get your filthy boots off my carpets!"

The tactical officers parted.

Footsteps sounded against the broken remnants of the doorway.

I stepped into the penthouse, flanked by two armed NCIS investigators. I was still wearing my service dress uniform, the gold braid and the silver star glistening under the chandelier.

Beatrice froze. The sneer on her lips faltered for a fraction of a second, replaced by pure, venomous hatred.

"You," Beatrice hissed. "You ungrateful, low-born peasant. You think because they pinned a piece of silver on your chest you have the right to invade my home?"

I walked slowly across the grand living room, stopping three feet from her. I did not raise my voice. I did not show anger. My presence alone filled the room with an icy, crushing weight.

"Beatrice Vance," I said smoothly. "Pursuant to an emergency warrant issued by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, I am executing the total seizure of Vance Global Logistics and all associated private holdings under the National Security Act."

"You have no authority over me!" she screamed, stepping into my face, her trembling finger inches from my medals. "I built this city! I built this family! You were nothing before my son brought you into this house, and you will be nothing when I am finished with you!"

"Your son Owen is in a federal holding cell, cooperating with prosecutors," I replied, watching her eyes widen in horror. "And Marcus's clandestine uplink in Fauquier County is currently surrounded by forty federal agents."

Beatrice took a step back, her chest heaving, the emerald diamonds on her neck trembling against her pale skin.

"You're lying," she whispered, her voice finally losing its haughty resonance. "Owen wouldn't betray me. Marcus has safeguards. You can't touch us!"

"I already have," I said, signaling the federal marshals behind me. "Cuff her."
