Chapter 5 - A Serpent's Web

The rain outside intensified, drumming against the reinforced glass of the library windows like a frantic heartbeat.
Daniel’s hands were shaking so violently that he could barely open the blue ledger. Emily stood beside him, her breath caught in her throat, the smell of gunpowder still lingering in the air like burnt sulfur.
On the floor, the wounded mercenary groaned in pain, but Daniel ignored him completely. He pulled the thick Manila envelope from the vault and broke the red wax seal.
Inside were three documents: a set of certified laboratory reports from a prestigious Swiss genetic institute, a series of notarized wire transfers totaling twenty million dollars, and a handwritten confession bearing Eleanor Sterling’s elegant, cursive script.
Daniel scanned the first page. His face went entirely white, the color draining from his cheeks until he looked like a corpse. His knees buckled slightly, and he had to catch himself against the heavy mahogany desk.
"Daniel?" Emily asked softly, alarmed by the look of pure terror in his eyes. "What does it say?"
"This... this is impossible," Daniel whispered, his voice cracking into a broken, strangled sound. "It can’t be true. It’s a lie. It has to be a lie."
Emily gently reached over and took the paper from his paralyzed fingers.
The Swiss genetic report was dated June 14, 1999. It was an official parentage analysis for the Sterling family line.
*Subject 1: Thomas Sterling (Deceased) – Biological Father: NEGATIVE.*
*Subject 2: Eleanor Sterling – Biological Mother: NEGATIVE.*
*Child: Daniel Thomas Sterling.*
Emily’s eyes widened as she read the concluding summary. Daniel was not a Sterling. He was not Eleanor’s biological son. He had been adopted in secret from an unregistered private clinic in Zurich after Eleanor’s real infant died of sudden infant death syndrome at birth. To protect the family line, the inheritance, and the public stock valuation of Sterling Global, Thomas and Eleanor had purchased an anonymous child and forged the birth certificate with the help of high-ranking government officials.
"I’m... I’m a fraud," Daniel murmured, staring at his hands as if they belonged to someone else. "My entire life. My name. The empire I’ve been running... none of it belongs to me."
"Keep reading," Emily said, her voice trembling as she turned to the handwritten confession beneath the lab reports.
The letter was written in Eleanor’s handwriting, dated three days before Cassandra Vance’s fatal 'accident.'
*To Whom It May Concern,*
*God forgive me for what I have done. Thomas discovered that our former secretary, Cassandra Vance, was pregnant with his biological child—a daughter conceived during our brief separation in 1998. When Cassandra refused Thomas’s payoff to abort the pregnancy, he swore to ruin her. When Cassandra gave birth to a girl with the Sterling sapphire eyes, Thomas realized this child was the only true biological heir to the Sterling bloodline.*
*Thomas hired men to silence Cassandra. He staged the corporate theft to destroy her credibility. I knew what he was planning, and I stayed silent to protect Daniel’s place as the sole heir. If you are reading this, it means the truth has outlived my cowardice. The true heir to the forty-billion-dollar Sterling Global estate is the daughter of Cassandra Vance.*
*Her name is Emily.*
Emily felt the room spin beneath her feet. The air vanished from her lungs. The leather ledger slipped from her fingers and crashed onto the floor.
"No..." Emily gasped, backing away from the desk, shaking her head in total disbelief. "No, that’s crazy. That’s impossible! My mother was a clerk! I grew up eating canned soup in the dark when the power got cut off! I’m a waitress!"
"The sapphire locket," Daniel said, his voice a ghost of a sound. He looked up at her, his eyes filled with a terrifying mix of grief and revelation. "The Sterling crest has an infinity knot with a raw sapphire in the center. It’s given only to direct biological daughters of the founding line. My mother gave it to your mother before Cassandra fled the city."
Daniel looked down at the paper in his hands, then at Emily.
"You aren't a bystander, Emily," Daniel whispered. "You’re the owner of this house. You’re the owner of the company. You are Thomas Sterling’s only living child."
Suddenly, the cold, sharp click of a gun hammer being pulled back sounded from the shadows of the library doorway.
"What a touching family reunion," a silky, cruel voice echoed across the room.
Emily and Daniel snapped their heads toward the door.
Standing in the frame, completely dry, wearing a black trench coat and holding a customized SIG Sauer pistol fitted with a silencer, was Vanessa Sterling.
Behind her stood three heavily armed private security operators dressed in sterile gray tactical gear.
Vanessa smiled, her teeth gleaming like daggers under the dim library chandelier. Her eyes were bright, triumphant, and completely devoid of human warmth.
"You really should have taken the train out of the city, little waitress," Vanessa cooed, stepping gracefully over the shattered porcelain on the floor. "And you, Daniel... poor, sweet, illegitimate Daniel. You were so predictable. I knew the moment Eleanor took that swan dive, you’d come straight for the safe."
"How are you out of jail?" Daniel demanded, instinctively stepping in front of Emily, his Glock raised. "You were arrested on that rooftop in front of a hundred witnesses!"
"Bail was posted forty minutes ago, darling," Vanessa laughed, a cold, mocking sound that sent shivers down Emily’s spine. "A five-million-dollar cash bond handled by a judge who owes his seat on the bench to my father’s hedge fund. The police report has already been modified. Eleanor was 'confused,' Daniel had an 'emotional breakdown,' and this wretched little server was identified as a corporate spy who staged the entire incident."
Vanessa gestured with her weapon toward the papers scattered on the desk.
"And now, you two have done all the heavy lifting for me," Vanessa purred. "You found the ledger. You found the DNA audit. You found the only two pieces of paper on earth that could strip me of my rightful claim to the Sterling fortune."
"You knew?" Daniel whispered, his voice trembling with disgust. "You knew about Emily all along?"
"Of course I knew, you idiot!" Vanessa hissed, her mask of elegance cracking into venomous rage. "I’ve been tracking Cassandra’s brat for two years! I placed her on the catering staff tonight at the gala! I wanted her to be there when Eleanor died. I wanted to frame her for Eleanor’s murder! But the stupid old bitch had to grab the railing, and Emily had to play the noble hero!"
Vanessa raised her weapon, aiming it squarely between Daniel’s eyes.

"Drop your gun, Daniel," Vanessa ordered, her finger tightening on the trigger. "Or the last thing this waitress sees will be your brains splattered across your father’s desk."
