Chapter 12 - The Poison in the Veins

"Leo!" Emily screamed, the composure of a corporate monarch shattering instantly into raw, feral terror.

She pushed past Daniel, ignoring his desperate orders to wait for armed backup. They tore down the private hall toward the VIP medical wing constructed within the penthouse. Leo’s recovery room was supposed to be the most fortified sanctuary on the eastern seaboard—airtight, bulletproof, and guarded by private security contractors vetted personally by Eleanor Vance.

When Emily kicked open the frosted glass doors, the scene drained the color from her face.

Two guards lay sprawled across the polished parquet floor, thick veins bulging black against their necks, foaming at the mouth in silent convulsions. Near the bed, the continuous monotone beep of the heart monitor shrieked like a dying animal: a flatline warning.

"Clear the airway!" Daniel shouted, rushing to the first fallen guard while Emily threw herself across Leo’s bed.

Her twelve-year-old brother, usually pale but full of cheeky laughter, was thrashing violently against the sterile sheets. His lips were an electric shade of cyanotic blue, his young fingers clawing at his throat as if an invisible garrote were choking the life out of him. The clear liquid inside his IV bag had turned a sickly, luminescent emerald.

"Leo! Look at me! Stay with me!" Emily sobbed, her fingernails tearing the IV needle directly out of his arm. Dark, thick blood welled up from the puncture site.

"Anaphylactic neurotoxin—synthetic aconite," Daniel spat, checking the bag's chemical stamp after checking the second guard’s pulse. "Both guards are dead. The HVAC filtered air was bypassed locally. Someone inside this house switched the line less than ten minutes ago."

Eleanor Vance entered the suite, accompanied by four armed sentries in tactical gear. The matriarch looked smaller in her velvet dressing gown, but her silver eyes blazed with an ancient, terrifying fury.

"Administer the broad-spectrum antidote from the safe in my dressing room!" Eleanor commanded, her walking cane striking the floor like a gavel. "Dr. Chen, if my great-grandson dies tonight, you will answer to God, and God will be far more merciful than I."

Within minutes, the medical team had pumped three vials of clear counter-agent into Leo's veins. Emily collapsed onto the edge of the mattress, clutching her brother's cold, trembling hand against her cheek, tears burning tracks down her face.

Leo's eyes fluttered open slowly, clouded with pain. "Emily..." he whispered, his voice like crushed leaves. "The lady with the silver scarf... she told me... she told me to say goodbye to you."

Emily’s spine froze. Her eyes snapped to Eleanor.

"Silver scarf?" Eleanor whispered, her face going translucent as if she had seen a specter rising from an open grave. "No. That's impossible. She burned in the North Sea."

May you like

"Who burned, Eleanor?" Emily demanded, standing up, her grief hardening instantly into diamond-sharp rage. "Who is trying to kill my brother?!"

Eleanor looked down at the dead guards, her aristocratic hands trembling for the first time in sixty years. "Your mother wasn't the only woman Thomas Sterling ruined, Emily. There was another. A shadow wife he married in secret before Cassandra. A woman named Victoria Drake... and she swore to extinguish every drop of Vance and Sterling blood from the earth."
