Chapter 2 - Blood on the Marble

The snapping of the secondary bolt sounded like an artillery shell detonating in an enclosed room.

The entire outer frame swung violently to the left. Eleanor’s frail body dropped six inches, jerking Emily violently against the metal railing. The hard edge crushed Emily’s ribs with a sickening thud, knocking the air entirely out of her lungs. Darkness flared at the edges of Emily's vision, but her fingers remained locked like vice grips around the old woman's wrist.

"Daniel, now!" Emily gasped, her voice strangled by agony. "I can't... hold her much longer!"

Daniel Sterling was a man forged in boardrooms, but in that heart-stopping second, every corporate instinct vanished, replaced by primal panic. Digging his designer leather shoes against the wet marble lip of the balcony, he hooked his left leg through the vertical steel bars for leverage, reached down with both hands, and seized Eleanor under her armpits.

"Heave!" Daniel roared, his back muscles straining against the tailored seams of his suit jacket.

Together, with Emily using her last reserve of human strength, they hoisted Eleanor over the edge. Her satin shoes scraped against the cold steel, then her knees cleared the rail, and finally, all three of them tumbled backward onto the soaked marble floor of the terrace in a breathless, trembling heap.

For three seconds, the rooftop was dead silent. Only the howling wind and the panting of three human beings filled the space.

Eleanor Sterling lay curled on the stone, clutching her chest, her breathing shallow and wheezing like a broken accordion. Emily collapsed onto her side, clutching her bruised ribs, her palms raw, bleeding, and trembling uncontrollably.

Then, the world shattered into chaos.

"Back off! Everyone stay back!" security guards barked, finally rushing through the stunned crowd of elites with tasers and batons drawn.

Across the marble floor, Vanessa was scrambling to her feet. Her designer gown was ripped at the shoulder, her expensive updo reduced to a rat’s nest of blonde hair. Seeing Eleanor alive, lying on the floor surrounded by her son and the waitress, Vanessa’s eyes burned with an animalistic hysteria.

"She’s insane!" Vanessa suddenly screamed, pointing a trembling finger at Eleanor. She spun around to face the guests, her voice pivoting into a masterclass of manipulative histrionics. "You all saw it! Eleanor had another psychotic episode! She tried to jump! I tried to catch her—I tried to pull her back, and this... this filthy catering girl attacked me!"

The crowd murmured. Billionaires looked at each other with furrowed brows. In the high-society world of the Sterlings, Eleanor’s health had been the subject of vicious rumors for months.

"Shut up, Vanessa!" Daniel’s voice cracked across the terrace like thunder. He rose to his feet slowly, his hands covered in rust, grease, and his mother’s blood. He stared at his wife of four years as if seeing a monster for the first time. "I saw you. I was standing right there at the elevator doors. You held a silver platter over this girl’s head. You were going to bash her skull in."

"Daniel, my love, you’re in shock!" Vanessa took a step toward him, tears springing to her eyes on command, her voice softening into a melodic, manipulative coo. "She was trespassing in the private VIP lounge! I thought she was an assassin! You know what the papers have been saying about mother's enemies! I was protecting our family!"

"You pushed her," a quiet, strained voice spoke up from the ground.

Every head turned. Emily was slowly pushing herself into a sitting position, wiping a smear of blood from her temple. Her uniform was torn, her hands shaking, but her dark eyes were steady as steel.

"You didn't try to save her," Emily said, her voice carrying clearly through the crisp night air. "You looked down at her while she was hanging by her fingers. You smiled. And you told her she was never coming back up."

"You lying little rat!" Vanessa lunged forward, her fingers hooked into claws, but two towering hotel security guards stepped in front of her, pinning her arms behind her back. "Let go of me! Do you know who I am? I am Vanessa Sterling! I own this hotel! I will have you fired, jailed, and destroyed by morning!"

"Call the police. Now," Daniel ordered the head of security, his voice dangerously low. "And get paramedics up here this instant!"

"Daniel, please!" Vanessa shrieked as she was dragged toward the penthouse entrance. "She’s lying! She’s a nobody! Look at her! She’s a thief trying to extort us! Don’t do this to me!"

As Vanessa was forcibly pulled through the glass doors, the distant wail of sirens began to echo from the streets below, climbing toward the sky.

Daniel dropped to his knees beside his mother. "Mom. Mom, stay with me. The medics are coming."

Eleanor was pale as a ghost, her lips tinted faint blue. Her breathing was dangerously ragged. But she wasn't looking at her son. Her trembling right hand reached out, brushing aside Daniel’s arm, and reached directly toward Emily.

Emily hesitated, then gently took the old woman’s frail, cold fingers. "It’s okay, Mrs. Sterling. You’re safe now. You’re on solid ground."

Eleanor pulled Emily’s hand closer, using the last ounce of her fading consciousness to pull the girl down until Emily’s ear was inches from her lips. The old woman's eyes were fixed on the sapphire locket resting against Emily's collarbone.

"The... safe..." Eleanor whispered, her breath rattling deep inside her chest.

"What?" Emily whispered back.

"The safe behind the portrait... in the study..." Eleanor’s grip tightened with shocking strength, her nails digging into Emily’s wrist. "Don't let them... don't let Vanessa find the blue ledger. He’s not... Daniel isn't..."

Before Eleanor could finish the sentence, her eyes rolled back into her head, and her grip went completely limp.

"Mom!" Daniel cried out, lunging to check her pulse. "Mom!"

The rooftop doors burst open, and a team of six emergency paramedics rushed onto the terrace with a stretcher and cardiac equipment. The flashing red and blue lights from the streets reflected off the glass facade of the penthouse, bathing the scene in a surreal, bloody glow.

As the paramedics swarmed Eleanor, placing an oxygen mask over her face and attaching defibrillator pads, Emily stood up slowly, clutching her ribs. She looked down at the locket around her neck—the only heirloom left to her by her mother, who had died in a hit-and-run twenty years ago.

Why had Eleanor recognized it? And what did she mean by *Daniel isn't...*?

Before Emily could take another step, Daniel turned to her. In his eyes was a tempest of grief, suspicion, and overwhelming gratitude.

"You saved her life," Daniel said, his voice cracking. "Who are you?"

"My name is Emily," she whispered.

"Emily," Daniel said, stepping closer. "Whatever happens tonight... do not leave this hotel. You are the only person who can put my wife behind bars. And something tells me... this was not just an argument."
