Chapter 17 - The Freezing of the Empire

On the massive digital displays lining the executive boardroom, red numbers suddenly cascaded down the screens like a digital waterfall of blood.

"What is this?" Emily whispered, staring at the ticker as the company’s stock plummeted twelve percent in four minutes.

"You thought you were clearing offshore accounts yesterday, little girl," Cassandra murmured, standing up gracefully, smoothing her designer pencil skirt. "You didn't freeze their money. You routed two point four billion dollars directly into black-market procurement accounts tied to North Korean front companies. And your digital signature—authorized via your personal retinal scan from that lovely desk upstairs—is stamped on every single wire transfer."

The double doors of the boardroom burst open.

Four agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, flanked by heavily armed United States Marshals, stepped into the room.

"Emily Cruz Sterling?" the lead agent announced, holding up an official federal arrest warrant. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, money laundering, and treason against the United States. Step away from the table and place your hands behind your back."

"She was framed!" Daniel roared, drawing his weapon, but Emily reached out and forcefully shoved his arm down.

"Daniel, no!" Emily yelled. "If you pull that trigger, they will execute you right here on the carpet!"

Cassandra Vance stood watching the spectacle with a look of pure, intoxicating triumph. She leaned down to whisper into Emily’s ear as the federal agents snapped heavy steel handcuffs around Emily's wrists:

"You wanted to know what defines a person when they're falling, Emily? The answer is gravity, darling. And I am the abyss."

As Emily was dragged backward out of the boardroom toward the private service elevators, the shareholders averted their eyes in cowardly silence. But just before the elevator doors slid shut, Emily locked eyes with Daniel.

In that split second, she didn't look defeated.

She gave him a tiny, almost imperceptible nod toward the second button on her red blazer—a micro-camera transmitter she had secretly activated the moment she walked into the building.
