Chapter 20 - The Runway of the Damned

Thunder roared across the tarmac of Republic Airport as a violent coastal squall battered Long Island. Sheets of rain swept sideways in seventy-mile-per-hour gusts, tearing across the wings of the sleek, ultra-long-range Gulfstream G700 idling at the end of Runway 4.
The twin jet engines were screaming at full turbine idle, glowing orange in the pitch-black rain.
A black armored SUV smashed through the perimeter chain-link fence at eighty miles per hour, tires smoking and spitting mud as it slid to a halt fifty yards from the aircraft's boarding stairs.
Emily stepped out into the storm, the rain instantly plastering her clothes to her body. Behind her, Daniel took up a flanking sniper position behind the open SUV door, his rifle locked onto the private security guards patrolling the stairs.
Cassandra Vance stood at the top of the airstair, wearing a heavy, fur-lined cashmere coat, looking down at Emily through the tempest.
In her left hand, Cassandra held the small, fragile wrist of Leo, who was shivering violently in hospital scrubs, his eyes wide with utter terror as the roar of the engines drowned out his cries.
In Cassandra's right hand was a gold-plated semi-automatic pistol pressed directly against the temple of Emily’s twelve-year-old brother.
"Stay back, Emily!" Cassandra screamed through the roaring storm, her voice cracking with psychotic mania. "One more step, and I splatter his brains all over the tarmac! Drop the weapon!"
"Let him go, Cassandra!" Emily screamed back, walking forward into the blinding rain, her Glock held steady with both hands, aimed directly at the woman who gave her life. "You have the money! You have the offshore accounts! Leave the boy!"
"The money is useless without the leverage, you stupid girl!" Cassandra laughed, her face twisting into a demonic sneer of pure hatred. "Eleanor lived. The board has turned against me! Victor Drake is dead! This boy is my only shield against the federal penitentiary!"
"He's an innocent child!"
"He's a Sterling!" Cassandra shrieked, cocking the hammer of the gun against Leo's skull. "And every Sterling must burn!"
"Daniel, don't take the shot!" Emily yelled, knowing the heavy rain and wind made a sniper round too risky.
Emily slowly, deliberately dropped her weapon onto the wet asphalt. She raised her hands in the air, stepping forward into the pool of light cast by the jet's landing gear.
"Take me," Emily shouted, her voice cutting through the scream of the wind. "I am the sole surviving heir with legal authority to unlock the Prometheus protocol. You take Leo, you get nothing. The second you cross into international airspace, the federal government will scramble fighter jets to force you down. But if you have me... you have forty billion dollars and the power to bring this nation to its knees."
Cassandra stared down at her daughter, her emerald eyes flashing with hesitation and greed. Her hand on the trigger wavered for a split second.
"Come up the stairs," Cassandra ordered, her voice trembling with manic tension. "Slowly. Hands where I can see them."
Emily took the first step onto the wet metal airstair.
Step two.
Step three.
She could see the tears streaming down Leo's pale cheeks. "Emily... don't..." the boy sobbed.
"It's okay, Leo," Emily whispered, keeping her eyes locked onto her mother. "I've got you."
Just as Emily reached the upper platform, three feet from the barrel of the gun, a massive, deafening explosion ripped through the rear cargo hold of the private jet.
The entire tail section of the aircraft buckled inward, engulfed in a massive fireball of burning jet fuel and black smoke. The shockwave threw Cassandra backward against the cabin door, sending her gold pistol clattering across the wet stairs.
"Leo, run!" Emily roared, lunging forward, scooping her brother into her arms and hurling him down the stairs toward Daniel, who caught the boy and pulled him behind the armored SUV.
Emily turned back toward Cassandra.
Cassandra was crawling across the bloodstained platform, her face blackened with soot, frantically reaching for her dropped weapon.
Emily brought her boot down with savage, crushing force directly onto Cassandra's wrist. The bone cracked with an audible snap, and the gun slid off the edge, clattering into the darkness below.
"It's over," Emily breathed, standing over her mother in the pouring rain, the fire from the burning jet illuminating her face in furious shades of gold and blood. "The nightmare is over."
Cassandra, pinned to the metal deck, looked up at Emily. But instead of crying out in pain, instead of begging for mercy... she began to laugh.
It was a cold, broken, terrifying sound that rose above the crackling flames and the roar of the storm.
"You think... you think this was my plan, Emily?" Cassandra choked out, blood leaking from the corner of her lips. "You poor, blind, arrogant fool..."
"Shut up," Emily said, reaching for the zip-ties Daniel had given her.
"I didn't fake my death twenty years ago to steal money," Cassandra whispered, her eyes wide with a horrific, sudden terror as she stared past Emily, out toward the dark, desolate perimeter of the airfield. "I ran because of *him*."
Emily froze. A deep, primal chill settled at the base of her neck.
"Who?" Emily demanded, grabbing her mother’s collar and shaking her violently. "Who are you running from?!"
Out in the darkness beyond the tarmac, the headlights of twelve identical, unmarked black sedans snapped on simultaneously, blinding the entire runway in a wall of high-beam halogen light.
The sedans formed a massive, impenetrable semicircle, cutting off Daniel, Leo, Emily, and the burning jet completely from the outside world.
From the lead vehicle, the rear door opened.
A man stepped out into the pouring rain. He wore a pristine, vintage tailored suit from a generation ago. He carried a silver pocket watch on a gold chain. He was tall, broad-shouldered, with silver hair swept back from a face that bore the unmistakable, undeniable bone structure of the Sterling dynasty.
A face that had been engraved on every corporate plaque in Manhattan.
A face that had been declared dead in a sealed casket twenty years ago.
Thomas Sterling.
He looked across the flooded tarmac directly into Emily’s eyes. He didn't look like a loving father. He didn't look like a repentant patriarch.
He looked at her with the cold, dead, hungry eyes of an absolute monarch returning to reclaim his throne, and in his hand, he raised a remote detonation trigger.
"Welcome home, my sweet daughter," Thomas Sterling’s voice echoed across the airport through a mounted bullhorn, smooth, aristocratic, and dripping with venomous malice. "Now... let us see if you are truly worthy of my blood."
The digital display on the remote device blinked:

And Emily Cruz Sterling stood paralyzed on the burning stairs, realizing that the real monster had never been in the shadows at all.
