Chapter 9 - The Stolen Security Tapes

The battle lines were drawn before dawn broke over Lake Michigan.

At seven o'clock the following morning, Vanessa appeared on a prominent live national morning talk show via a remote satellite feed from a luxury hotel penthouse in downtown Chicago.

She wore a somber black silk blouse buttoned high at the neck, completely devoid of makeup to accentuate her pale, exhausted complexion.

A delicate gold cross hung from her neck, and her eyes were strategically reddened with artificial tears as she clutched a crumpled tissue in her hand.

"I gave that man my whole heart," Vanessa sobbed to the sympathetic morning anchor, her voice trembling with rehearsed vulnerability.

"From the very first day, Olivia made it clear that she would never allow another woman in her father’s life."

"She whispered horrible, threatening things to me throughout the ceremony, and when I tried to ask her to give our marriage a chance beside the cake, she snapped."

"She hurled the cake into my face, and when James arrived, he didn't protect me; he protected her delusion."

"He pushed me into that table, laughed at my pain, and threw his ring into the dirt before having his private thugs throw me onto the street without a single penny."

"I am terrified for my safety, and I am filing a ten-million-dollar federal civil rights and battery suit against James Carter this afternoon."

Down in the mansion’s lower security command room, my father, Harrison, Arthur, and I watched the broadcast on a bank of high-resolution monitors.

"She really is an extraordinary actress," Harrison murmured, crossing his arms with a grim shake of his head.

"If we didn't have the truth on our side, half the juries in this state would be writing her a blank check by noon."

Suddenly, the security console’s red alert light began blinking frantically, accompanied by a sharp, high-pitched chime.

The chief of estate security, a former federal agent named Marcus, tapped his headset and zoomed in on the surveillance cameras monitoring the basement server room.

The server room housed the physical hard drives that recorded all forty-eight high-definition, audio-enabled cameras across the entire Carter estate.

On the screen, a figure wearing a dark gray maintenance uniform was hastily slipping a magnetic access card into the server room door lock.

"What is Donald doing in the main server vault?" Arthur asked, his voice tightening with immediate suspicion.

"Donald is the junior facilities tech we hired four months ago on Vanessa’s personal recommendation," Marcus stated, his eyes narrowing as he watched the monitor.

The door clicked open, and Donald rushed inside, pulling a high-powered industrial degaussing magnet and an external flash drive from his tool pouch.

He moved directly toward the rack labeled "TERRACE & GARDEN ARCHIVES," his hands shaking with visible anxiety.

"He’s attempting to wipe the raw surveillance footage from yesterday afternoon!" Marcus barked, reaching for his radio.

"Security Team Alpha, intercept the subject in Server Room B immediately; do not let him touch the primary drives!"

Before Marcus could even finish his transmission, the heavy steel door of the server room was kicked open by two armed security guards who had been positioned down the hall.

They tackled Donald to the floor with ruthless efficiency, pinning his arms behind his back and knocking the magnet clattering across the raised metal flooring.

Within three minutes, Donald was dragged into the command center in handcuffs, his face pale as chalk and sweat dripping from his chin.

"Talk to me, Donald," my father said, his voice dropping into an arctic register that sent a visible shiver down the young technician's spine.

"Who paid you to destroy the security records of my daughter’s assault?"

Donald looked at James, then at Harrison, who was already holding up a legal pad with the words "FEDERAL CONSPIRACY AND EVIDENCE TAMPERING" written in bold red ink.

"I... I had no choice, Mr. Carter!" Donald stammered, his knees buckling under the weight of his terror.

"She called me last night from the Drake Hotel!"

"She said she would wire me fifty thousand dollars the moment I wiped the terrace camera logs and handed over the master backups!"

"She told me if I didn't do it, she’d tell the police that I was her accomplice in stealing jewelry from the mansion!"

"Did you delete anything?" Marcus demanded, grabbing the technician by his collar.

"No! I swear on my life, I didn't even get the drive mounted!" Donald cried, tears streaming down his cheeks.

"Everything is untouched! The four-K terrace footage with the overhead directional audio is completely intact on Drive Four!"

Harrison looked over at my father, a triumphant, predatory glint igniting in his gray eyes.

"She just handed us the rope to hang her, James," Harrison declared with chilling calm.

"She attempted to destroy critical evidence in an active felony assault and extortion investigation."

"Arthur, prepare the grand ballroom for an emergency live press conference at eleven o'clock sharp," James commanded, turning away from the trembling technician.

"Invite every major news outlet, every tabloid reporter parked at our gates, and every network that aired Vanessa’s pathetic little performance this morning."

"It's time to pull the curtain on her entire life."
