Chapter 3 - The Fall of the Altar

"Olivia! Sweetheart, look at me," Dad breathed, his voice thick with a terror I had never heard in him before.

His strong hands, warm and steady, instantly cradled my shaking shoulders, completely ignoring the greasy white buttercream that immediately ruined his bespoke tuxedo jacket.

I buried my face against his crisp white dress shirt, sobbing softly as the reality of the public humiliation crashed over me like a tidal wave.

"Dad... I'm sorry... I didn't do anything... I swear I didn't," I choked out, my voice muffled against his chest.

"Shh, do not apologize, do not say you are sorry for a single breath," he commanded softly, gently brushing the heavy clumps of frosting from my eyelashes with his thumb.

His piercing blue eyes were brimming with unshed tears, searching my face to ensure my skin was not broken or bruised.

The profound heartbreak that washed over his features was devastating to witness; it was the realization of a protective father who had invited an executioner into his daughter's sanctuary.

Slowly, deliberate as a judge preparing to deliver a capital sentence, James rose to his full height and turned around.

The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by an arctic, lethal cold that seemed to lower the temperature of the entire garden terrace.

Vanessa stood three feet away, smoothing the lace over her hips, though her breathing was shallow and uneven.

"What in God's name were you thinking?" James asked, his voice deceptively low, vibrating with an intensity that rattled the nearest champagne flutes.

"James, darling, she provoked me!" Vanessa protested, instantly raising her hands to her chest in a theatrical display of fragile innocence.

"She came over here whispering horrible, disrespectful things about me, telling me that you would never truly love me!"

"You are lying," James said flatly, not blinking, not wavering.

"She has treated me like dirt from the moment we announced our engagement!" Vanessa cried, raising her voice so the guests would hear her narrative.

"She needed to learn some respect! She refuses to accept that you are a married man now!"

"Respect?" James stepped forward, his silhouette towering over her.

"You think dumping a cake over my twenty-one-year-old daughter's head in front of our entire world is teaching her respect?"

"She's trying to ruin our lives!" Vanessa screeched, her carefully practiced poise finally shattering under his unyielding stare.

"She is my daughter, Vanessa!"

"AND I AM YOUR WIFE!" she screamed back, the desperate shriek echoing off the high stone walls of the mansion.

The word hung toxic and heavy in the midday air, met only by the horrified stares of Chicago's elite society.

James slowly shook his head, a look of profound disgust curling the corners of his lips.

"I married you because I was foolish enough to believe you possessed a heart capable of loving my family," he said coldly.

Vanessa laughed, a high, bitter, ugly sound that stripped away the last remnants of her bridal beauty.

"Your family? That spoiled, pathetic little brat has spent this entire wedding trying to steal you away from me!"

"Enough," James warned, taking another step forward, placing himself entirely between Vanessa and me.

"No, it is not enough!" Vanessa raged, completely consumed by the madness of her wounded vanity.

She spun toward the dessert table, plunging both of her bare hands into the remaining tiers of the mangled wedding cake.

She scooped up two massive handfuls of thick, sugary paste and whipped her body around, hurling the white sludge directly toward my face.

Dad did not hesitate for a microsecond.

He shifted his body like a shield, taking the full brunt of the flying frosting across the front of his silk-lapel tuxedo and across his cheek.

Gasps of horror and muffled shouts erupted from the guests, several people taking out their phones to record the unfolding catastrophe.

Completely unhinged, Vanessa lunged forward, her manicured nails curled into claws, aiming a vicious strike straight toward my eyes.

I flinched, pulling my arms up to protect my face.

The slap never landed.

Like an iron vice, my father's right hand snapped out and seized Vanessa's wrist in mid-air, stopping her strike inches from my cheek.

"DON'T YOU TOUCH HER AGAIN!" James roared, his voice shaking the crystal chandeliers above our heads.

With a sharp, dismissive thrust of his arm, he shoved her flailing hand away from us.

Vanessa, thrown completely off balance by the force of his rejection, stumbled backward across the slick, buttercream-covered marble.

Her slender white bridal heels skidded on the greasy floor, her arms windmilling frantically in the air as she fought for purchase.

With a violent thud, the small of her back smashed directly into the heavy wooden edge of the grand wedding cake table.

The antique table shrieked against the stone, its decorative brass legs buckling under the sudden impact.

Directly above her, the remaining two towering tiers of the thousand-dollar confection shuddered, tilted forward, and began their inevitable descent.

For one agonizing second, Vanessa looked up, her green eyes widening in pure, unadulterated terror as the mountain of sugar gave way.

Then, with a deafening splat, the entire wedding cake collapsed directly over her head.
