Chapter 10 - The Press Conference Retribution

By ten-thirty that morning, the grand ballroom of the Carter estate was packed to maximum capacity with over seventy journalists, camera crews, and broadcast correspondents.
The flashes of SLR cameras created an unbroken, blinding rhythm against the wood-paneled walls, and the roar of competing reporters testing microphones was deafening.
Directly above the raised podium, two massive eighty-inch digital display screens hung from the ceiling, their surfaces completely dark and silent.
Behind the heavy velvet curtains backstage, I stood beside my father, smoothing the lapels of his sharp navy bespoke suit.
"Are you ready for this, Olivia?" he asked softly, placing his warm hands over my shoulders.
"The whole world is watching us right now."
"I've spent months being terrified of her lies, Dad," I replied, meeting his piercing blue eyes with a fierce, unwavering confidence I hadn't felt in a year.
"It's time for her to be terrified of the truth."
The double doors opened, and James stepped out onto the stage, his presence instantly silencing the chaotic room like a sudden clap of thunder.
The reporters scrambled for their seats as James took his place behind the podium, adjusting the cluster of microphones with calm, commanding authority.
Harrison Vance stood to his left, holding a thick leather binder, while Marcus remained stationed by the digital control console.
"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen," James began, his resonant voice projecting effortlessly through the ballroom speakers.
"Over the last eighteen hours, an aggressive, malicious, and entirely fabricated campaign of public defamation has been launched against my family."
"Allegations of domestic violence, cruelty, and unprovoked assault have been broadcast across millions of television screens by a woman claiming to be my legal wife."
A reporter from the front row instantly jumped to his feet, shouting over the quiet hum of the room.
"Mr. Carter! Did you or did you not push your new bride into the wedding cake and order your security to throw her onto the street without funds?"
James held up a single, calm hand, silencing the reporter mid-sentence.
"I do not deal in rumors, rhetoric, or paid interviews," James answered coldly.
"I deal exclusively in verifiable facts."
"Marcus, play the multi-angle master recording from Terrace Camera Three and Overhead Audio Nine."
The ballroom lights dimmed instantly, and the two massive screens flared to life with crystal-clear, four-thousand-pixel high-definition video.
The recording was shot from a high, unobstructed angle directly above the cake table, accompanied by studio-grade directional sound that picked up every whisper.
A collective gasp rippled through the press corps as the scene unfolded in undeniable, unedited clarity.
On the screens, Vanessa could be seen aggressively stalking toward me, her face twisting into a hideous snarl as her cold words echoed through the ballroom speakers:
"Then stop trying to make everything about you... You keep following James around like you can't accept that he has a wife now."
The room fell dead silent as the recording showed me attempting to walk away peacefully, only for Vanessa to intentionally block my exit with her lace gown.
Then came the horrifying climax: Vanessa gripping the heavy top tier with both hands and screaming, "STAY AWAY FROM HIM! YOU DON'T BELONG HERE!" before slamming it directly into my face.
Journalists leaned forward, typing furiously on their laptops as the footage continued without a single cut.
They watched in stunned silence as James charged in to protect me, blocking Vanessa’s violent second assault with his forearm.
They saw Vanessa stumble backward under her own momentum on the slick floor, crashing into the table and pulling the remaining tiers onto herself.
And finally, the entire press corps watched as James looked at his gold wedding ring, slid it from his finger, and hurled it into the ruins of her greed, declaring the marriage forever finished.
When the lights came back up, not a single reporter dared to speak.
"As you can clearly see," Harrison Vance announced, stepping up to the microphone, "Olivia Carter was the sole victim of an unprovoked, pre-meditated criminal battery."
"Furthermore, no marriage was ever legally finalized in the state of Illinois, as the certificate was withheld due to immediate breach of contract."
"This morning, Cook County prosecutors issued a formal warrant for the arrest of Vanessa on charges of felony aggravated assault, evidence tampering, and corporate fraud."
Meanwhile, twenty miles away in the penthouse suite of the Drake Hotel, Vanessa sat on the edge of the unmade king-sized bed, clutching a glass of champagne with shaking hands.
She watched the press conference broadcast live on the flat-screen television across from her, the unedited video playing her exact words back to the entire nation.
The glass slipped from her fingers, shattering against the hardwood floor and spilling golden liquid across her bare feet.
Her cellphone rang violently on the nightstand; it was her celebrity attorney, who had called to formally terminate their representation before hanging up without another word.
A sharp, heavy knock pounded against her hotel room door.
"Chicago Police Department! Open the door immediately!" an officer shouted through the wood.
Vanessa backed away in pure terror, her breath coming in ragged, suffocating gasps as her empire of deceit dissolved into ash.
Then, her private burner phone buzzed once on the dresser with an incoming text from an untraceable, encrypted number:

"The Carters have the tapes, but they don't know about the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands... Meet me at the docks at midnight, or you face the cage alone."
Vanessa stared at the illuminated screen, a desperate, dangerous fire rekindling in her cold, ruined eyes.
