Chapter 8 - The Smear Campaign

Harrison’s warning proved prophetic before the sun even vanished behind the Chicago skyline.
By eight o'clock that evening, my phone began vibrating continuously on my bedside table like an angry hornet.
Dozens of text messages, missed calls from unknown numbers, and notifications from social media apps flooded my lock screen in a relentless avalanche.
I picked up the phone, unlocked the screen, and felt my stomach drop into a bottomless pit of cold dread.
A video had been uploaded to a prominent celebrity gossip portal and was already spreading across Twitter and TikTok like wildfire.
The title blasted in sensational red capital letters: "BILLIONAIRE JAMES CARTER'S SPOILED DAUGHTER ATTACKS NEW BRIDE AT THE ALTAR!"
With trembling hands, I tapped the screen and watched the nightmare play out in sickening, calculated distortion.
Someone had carefully trimmed the footage taken by one of the guests on the terrace, cutting out Vanessa’s initial threats and cruel provocations entirely.
The clip began precisely at the moment I stepped toward the cake table, making it look as though I was aggressively cornering a helpless bride.
The audio had been cleverly manipulated with dramatic, ominous background music, drowning out Vanessa’s original scream of "STAY AWAY FROM HIM!"
Instead, the video cut abruptly to the moment the cake tier flew through the air, framed at an angle that made it appear as though I had lunged into the confection to destroy it.
Then came the second clip, showing my father shoving Vanessa away while she tumbled into the grand table, sending the remaining tiers crashing over her body.
The clip ended with Vanessa sobbing on the floor in her ruined gown, while James and I coldly turned our backs and walked into the mansion like ruthless aristocrats.
The internet had swallowed the fabricated narrative whole.
The comment section was a toxic cesspool of vitriol directed entirely at my father and me.
"Rich girl couldn't handle her daddy getting married, so she threw a tantrum and ruined the poor woman’s life!" read one comment with twenty thousand likes.
"Look at that monster shove his new wife into the table! He should be in jail for domestic abuse!" read another.
"Cancel the Carter Logistics empire! Boycott everything this family owns!" screamed a third.
My chest tightened until I could barely draw breath, a suffocating panic rising in my throat.
Within three hours, the video had garnered over four million views, and local news stations were already running breaking segments with the headline: "High Society Wedding Meltdown."
Suddenly, the loud wail of a megaphone cut through the evening air from outside our estate gates.
I ran to the front window and pulled back the heavy drapes.
The tranquil private lane in front of our mansion had transformed into a chaotic media circus.
Three satellite news vans with bright searchlights were parked across the lawn, their towering antennas pointed toward the sky.
Dozens of paparazzi and freelance bloggers were swarming the security gates, flashing cameras through the wrought-iron bars every time a light flickered in the house.
A young, aggressive tabloid reporter was standing on the hood of an SUV with a microphone, shouting toward the second-floor windows.
"Olivia Carter! Did you intentionally assault your father’s bride because you feared losing your inheritance?"
"James Carter, will you face domestic battery charges for throwing your wife into the cake?"
Tears of pure frustration and outrage stung my eyes as I watched the vultures feeding on our agony.
The bedroom door opened softly, and my father walked in, carrying a glass of water and a pair of noise-canceling headphones.
He didn't look at the window; he didn't even glance toward the flashing strobe lights reflecting off our walls.
His expression was a fortress of quiet, unbreakable resolve.
"Don't look at them, Olivia," he said gently, guiding me away from the glass and sitting me down on the edge of the bed.
"Turn the phone off, sweetheart; nothing good will come from reading the poison written by strangers who don't know the truth."
"Dad, they're destroying your reputation," I choked out, a tear finally escaping and running down my cheek.
"The entire world thinks you're an abuser and that I'm an unhinged, jealous monster."
"Your company’s stock could plummet tomorrow morning because of this lie!"
James took the phone from my shaking hand, powered it down completely, and laid it face-down on the nightstand.
"A reputation built on twenty-five years of integrity does not collapse overnight because of a thirty-second edited video," he said with absolute conviction.
"Vanessa is using the only weapon she understands: sensationalism, victimhood, and theatrical cruelty."
"She thinks she can embarrass me into cutting a fifty-million-dollar settlement check just to make the headlines go away."
"She forgets who built this company from nothing in the back of an abandoned warehouse on the South Side."
"I don't pay blackmail, Olivia, and I don't negotiate with arsonists."
"Harrison has already deployed our crisis management firm, and our digital forensics team is tracing the exact IP address that uploaded that doctored clip."

"By tomorrow morning, we won't just tell the world what happened on that terrace."
"We are going to show them every single second in crystal-clear high definition."
