Chapter 4 - The Ring in the Frosting

The monumental collapse sounded like a wet sack of flour slamming onto concrete.

White buttercream exploded in all directions, plastering the front of Vanessa's multi-thousand-dollar designer lace gown.

Dense layers of yellow sponge broke apart over her shoulders, scattering shattered sugar flowers, edible pearls, and gold leaf across the floor.

Her bridal veil was dragged down by the sheer weight of the frosting, pinning platinum strands of hair across her face like sticky spiderwebs.

The sparkling diamond tiara, the ultimate symbol of her supposed triumph, was knocked sideways, dangling absurdly over her left ear.

Vanessa sat sprawled in the middle of the wreckage, her legs tangled in ruined tulle, breathing in ragged, hysterical gasps.

She looked like a grotesque caricature of a bride, coated from head to waist in smashed confectionery ruins.

"YOU RUINED MY WEDDING!" she shrieked at the top of her lungs, slamming her fists into the greasy marble floor.

Frosting splattered over her arms, but nobody moved to assist her; not a single bridesmaid stepped forward, and not a single friend offered a hand.

The one hundred guests remained frozen in stunned repulse, watching the woman who had sought to destroy an innocent girl become engulfed by her own destruction.

James did not step toward her.

He did not offer an apology, nor did he display even a flicker of the chivalrous concern that had once defined his character.

He remained planted like an ancient oak beside me, his left arm locked firmly and protectively around my trembling shoulders.

For a long, agonizing minute, the only sound on the vast terrace was the wet dripping of frosting sliding from the edges of the shattered table.

James simply stared down at the woman he had sworn to love until death parted them.

The furious red flush that had darkened his face began to recede, leaving behind something infinitely more devastating: absolute, chilling certainty.

"Vanessa," my father said, his voice dropping into a quiet, icy register that sent shivers down my arms.

"Look what you've done to me!" she wept hysterically, wiping a glob of yellow sponge from her diamond necklace.

"You let her push me! You attacked your own bride!"

James slowly looked down at the thick white smear covering the chest of his ruined tuxedo.

He turned his gaze down to me, taking in my trembling frame, my bruised pride, and the sticky mess clinging to my mother's pearls.

Then, he lifted his eyes back to Vanessa, his gaze hollowed of every trace of affection.

"You attacked my daughter because you are so consumed by petty, pathetic jealousy that you cannot stand her breathing the same air as you," James stated with surgical clarity.

"She's an ungrateful child!" Vanessa sobbed, trying and failing to stand, her silk dress too slick to gain traction.

"You tried to force me to choose between my wife and my child," Dad continued, his voice steady as iron.

"I am your wife! I deserve your loyalty!"

"Loyalty is not something you can beat out of someone through cruelty, Vanessa."

A silence so profound fell over the covered terrace that the distant rustling of maple leaves outside felt deafening.

Even the catering staff, holding their silver serving trays, stood motionless like marble statues against the outer pillars.

Slowly, with deliberate slowness, James lowered his eyes to his left hand.

Resting upon his ring finger was the gleaming, heavy band of platinum and gold.

Only two hours earlier, beneath a canopy of white lilies, he had slid that ring onto his finger while promising to honor, cherish, and protect her.

Now, he stared at the band of metal as though it were a rusted chain that had bound him to a venomous stranger.

"James...?" Vanessa whispered, her hysterical fury suddenly evaporating into raw, panicked dread.

She recognized the look in his eyes; it was the exact expression he wore when he permanently terminated a hostile corporate takeover.

My father did not utter another word of explanation.

With his right hand, he grasped the gold band.

He pulled it smoothly from his finger, feeling neither hesitation nor regret.

My breath caught in my throat as I watched the metallic gleam between his fingers.

Vanessa’s pale face drained of what little color it had left beneath the smeared frosting.

"James, no... what are you doing?" she gasped, her hands trembling as she reached out through the air.

James looked at the sprawling, yellow-and-white ruins of the multi-tier cake lying between them.

Without a second thought, he flicked his wrist.

The heavy gold wedding ring arced through the bright afternoon air.

It landed with a soft, sickening squelch directly in the center of the crushed cake tier, sinking halfway into the thick white buttercream.

The ring settled deep within the sticky debris, forever separated from the hand that was meant to wear it.

Vanessa froze, her eyes locked onto the half-buried metal like she had just watched her entire future get executed.

"No..." she whimpered, her voice cracking into a broken, pathetic squeak.

May you like

James took a half-step back, pulling me tighter against his side.

"THIS MARRIAGE IS OVER!" he pronounced, his voice ringing like a final judgment through every corner of the estate.
