Chapter 9 - The Bullet and the Vow

The gunshot was deafening inside the enclosed steel vault.

The muzzle flash lit up the cold concrete walls in a brilliant, blinding burst of orange and white. The bullet tore through the air with a supersonic crack.

In that fraction of a second, instinct took over. Dante didn't calculate. He didn't hesitate. With a violent, desperate burst of speed, he threw his body across the gap between them, wrapping his arms around Elena and twisting his torso to shield her completely from the incoming round.

*THWACK.*

A sickening, heavy impact echoed through the room. Dante let out a sharp, choked gasp, his entire body shuddering against Elena as the bullet struck him high in the right shoulder, tearing through his tailored suit jacket and piercing muscle and bone.

“DANTE!” Elena screamed, the sound tearing from the deepest recesses of her soul.

The sheer momentum of the impact threw them both backward onto the reinforced floor. Dante hit the concrete hard, his heavy frame landing on top of her, his breath coming in ragged, bloody gasps.

Across the room, Isabella’s eyes widened in sudden, manic shock. She hadn't meant to shoot Dante; her hatred had been aimed entirely at Elena. But seeing the mighty Dante Moretti brought to his knees by her own hand broke whatever thread of sanity she had left.

With a wild, feral screech, Isabella raised the revolver again, her shaking hands struggling to cock the hammer for a second shot. “Die! Both of you, just die!”

She never pulled the trigger.

Elena, pinned beneath Dante’s heavy frame, reached out with trembling, desperate fingers. Her hand closed around the grip of the small pistol Dante had handed her minutes earlier.

She didn't hesitate. She remembered her father’s voice echoing from the docks of Genoa: *Safety off. Steady breath. Protect the people you love.*

Elena raised the weapon, aligned the sights with Isabella’s right shoulder, and squeezed the trigger.

BANG!

The shot was clean, precise, and devastating. The 9mm round struck Isabella’s right collarbone with pinpoint accuracy. The impact spun the heiress around like a broken doll. The heavy revolver flew from her grip, clattering harmlessly across the steel floor, while the incendiary bottle shattered on the concrete, splashing inert kerosene harmlessly away from the servers.

Isabella collapsed against the server racks, clutching her shoulder, screaming in agony as crimson blood seeped through her fingers.

Elena pushed herself up, ignoring the ringing in her ears and the smell of gunpowder. She dropped her weapon and scrambled to Dante’s side.

“Dante! Dante, look at me!” she cried, tears streaming down her face as her hands frantically pressed down on the bleeding wound near his collarbone. Blood was warm and slick against her palms, soaking through his white shirt with terrifying speed. “Stay with me! Please, God, Dante, stay with me!”

Dante groaned, his eyelashes fluttering as he struggled to remain conscious. Despite the blinding, agonizing pain radiating through his shoulder and chest, his dark eyes slowly opened, focusing entirely on Elena’s tear-stained face.

A weak, ragged smile touched the corners of his lips.

“You... you took the shot,” he whispered, his voice hoarse, bubbling with pain. “Good girl. Center mass.”

“Shut up! Stop talking!” Elena sobbed, pressing down harder on the wound, her entire body shaking. “You idiot! Why did you jump in front of me?! You could have died!”

Dante raised his uninjured left hand, his fingers trembling as he reached up to touch her cheek. His thumb wiped away a hot tear, leaving a streak of his own blood on her porcelain skin.

“I told you...” Dante breathed, his chest heaving with the effort to speak. “No one... will ever hurt you again. Not while I have breath in my lungs.”

Heavy, synchronized boots thundered down the concrete corridor outside.

Within seconds, six FBI tactical officers swarmed into the vault, assault rifles raised, followed closely by Agent Katherine Miller and a team of federal paramedics carrying trauma kits.

“Drop the weapon! Secure the perimeter!” an agent shouted.

“Over here! We need a medic NOW!” Agent Miller yelled, running directly toward Dante and Elena.

The paramedics immediately dropped to their knees beside Dante, ripping open his shirt, applying pressure dressings, and preparing an intravenous line.

Elena was gently pulled back by Agent Miller, but Dante’s fingers remained locked around her wrist, refusing to let go even as the medical team worked frantically around him.

“Elena...” Dante rasped, his eyes locking onto hers with a fierce, desperate clarity that defied the darkness creeping at the edges of his vision.

“I’m here, Dante. I’m right here,” she wept, gripping his hand with both of hers, kissing his bloody knuckles.

“Six years ago... I lost you in an ambulance,” he whispered, the paramedics lifting him onto a portable gurney. “Don't leave me this time. Stay with me.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” Elena promised, her voice ringing with absolute certainty through the chaos of the vault. “I’m staying right beside you. Forever.”

Dante’s grip relaxed slightly as the paramedics administered a heavy sedative, his eyes finally closing as they wheeled him toward the elevator.

Across the room, two federal agents roughly hauled a sobbing, bleeding Isabella to her feet, reading her her constitutional rights as they dragged her away toward a future in a maximum-security federal penitentiary.

Elena stood in the center of the vault, her ivory pantsuit stained with Dante’s blood, the sirens wailing through the concrete shafts from the storm above. She looked down at the sapphire pendant resting against her chest.

The nightmare was over. The ghosts of Genoa had finally been laid to rest.
