Chapter 7 - The Trap in the Underground Vault

Before Salvatore’s hand could fully emerge from his coat pocket, the heavy glass doors of the boardroom burst open with explosive force.
Four heavily armed tactical officers from the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team swarmed into the room, assault rifles raised, laser sights painting crimson dots across Salvatore’s chest.
“FEDERAL AGENTS! HANDS IN THE AIR! DROP TO YOUR KNEES!” the lead agent screamed, his voice shattering what remained of the boardroom’s calm.
Salvatore froze, his eyes bulging in pure, helpless shock. Slowly, trembling under the weight of a dozen red laser dots dancing across his forehead, he pulled his empty hands from his coat and raised them into the air. Two tactical officers tackled him to the floor, pinning him against the plush carpet and roughly wrenching his arms behind his back. The sharp, heavy click of federal handcuffs echoed through the room.
Dante didn't flinch. He hadn't even blinked when the agents breached the room.
He stood calmly beside Elena, his hand resting reassuringly on her shoulder. Her heart was racing, but feeling Dante’s steady, unyielding touch gave her an anchor in the midst of the chaos.
A tall, sharp-featured woman in a dark charcoal trench coat stepped into the boardroom behind the tactical team. She pulled a gold federal badge from her belt and displayed it to the stunned board members.
“Special Agent Katherine Miller, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Organized Crime Division,” she announced. She looked down at Salvatore, who was writhing on the carpet, his face pressed against the floor. “Salvatore Romano, you are under arrest for federal racketeering, securities fraud, international arms trafficking, and the conspiracy to commit murder in the first degree regarding Marco and Sofia Rossi.”
“You have nothing on me!” Salvatore spat, his voice muffled by the carpet. “My lawyers will have me out before lunchtime! You don't have proof of anything!”
“We have everything, Salvatore,” Dante said smoothly, walking around the table until he stood looking down at his former partner. “Last night, while your daughter was busy planting cheap jewelry in Elena’s apron, my cyber-intelligence team decrypted your private offshore server. Every wire transfer, every contract hit, every bribe paid to port officials in Genoa, New York, and Miami over the last fifteen years is now sitting on Agent Miller’s desk.”
Salvatore’s eyes widened with horrifying realization. He looked at Dante with pure, unadulterated hatred. “You set this up... from the very beginning. You never intended to marry Isabella. You used her.”
“I used her greed, just like you used everyone in this city,” Dante replied, his voice devoid of any warmth. “You killed Elena’s parents. You stole their life’s work. You hunted an innocent eighteen-year-old girl across two continents. Did you really think you were going to walk away with a multi-billion-dollar merger?”
Agent Miller nodded to her team. “Get him out of here.”
The officers hauled the cursing, struggling patriarch to his feet and marched him out of the boardroom. The remaining board members sat in stunned, terrified silence, watching Dante and Elena with a newfound, profound respect that bordered on reverence.
Dante turned to the board members. “The emergency meeting is concluded. Detailed operational restructuring plans will be sent to your offices by tomorrow morning. You are dismissed.”
Without waiting for a response, the twenty-two executives gathered their papers and scrambled out of the room like frightened mice, leaving Dante, Elena, and Agent Miller alone in the massive glass room overlooking the Manhattan skyline.
Agent Miller walked over to Elena, extending a hand. Elena shook it, feeling the firm, professional grip of the federal agent.
“Miss Rossi,” Miller said, her tone softening considerably. “I spent three years working the Rossi maritime assassination file in Italy before I was transferred to the New York field office. Your father was an honest man in an industry filled with vipers. I’m sorry it took us this long to bring justice to his killers.”
“Thank you, Agent Miller,” Elena said softly, a genuine, tearful smile touching her lips. “It feels like I can finally stop running.”
“There’s just one more thing,” Miller said, turning her attention back to Dante. Her expression became serious once more. “Isabella Romano posted bail two hours ago through an emergency bondsman. When our agents arrived at her penthouse to serve the federal conspiracy warrant, she had already vanished. Her phone is off, and her passport hasn't been flagged at any airport.”
Dante’s jaw tightened, the dangerous predator instantly returning behind his eyes. “She’s still in the city.”
“We believe so,” Miller confirmed. “She took a vintage Mercedes from her father’s private garage. We’ve pinged her last toll crossing heading toward Long Island. We have units sweeping the area, but I strongly advise both of you to stay in this federal building under protective custody until we have her in a cell.”
“No,” Dante said without hesitation. “Long Island means she’s heading back to my estate.”
“Why would she go back there?” Elena asked, fear knotting in her stomach. “There are hundreds of security guards and cameras there.”
“The estate has an underground vault,” Dante explained, turning to Elena with an urgent, dark intensity. “Before we signed the preliminary merger papers, Salvatore insisted on storing a physical backup of their family’s black-ledger hard drives in my subterranean safe. Isabella knows the access codes to the outer blast doors. She isn't just running, Elena. She’s going to get those drives to negotiate an escape with the Italian syndicates.”
Dante looked at Agent Miller. “I know every inch of that property. Your tactical teams will take forty minutes to coordinate a perimeter. By then, she could destroy the evidence or slip out through the private marina.”
“Mr. Moretti, standard protocol does not allow—”
May you like
“I don't give a damn about your protocol,” Dante interrupted, pulling his encrypted phone from his pocket and dialing his private security detail. “Elena and I are going to Long Island. Send your helicopters if you want, Agent Miller. But if Isabella Romano touches one foot on my property, she answers to me.”
